Advanced scanner will ping objects at least 500,000ls away. Yes, parallax is fun and rewarding in its own way but finally getting the AdvScan makes the task quicker (think systems with 5 stars and 50-60 other bodies for example. Several hours or days work in one system) which when you are scanning 100-500 or so systems per trip is a boon especially when you have to still travel to the interesting objects for a surface scan. Also, you can always disable it and do parallax when you are in the mood.
