Explorer Engineering behind Combat rank ...

Why oh Why Frontier, CMDRs and anyone else who will listen, are Exploration inproving Engineering mods like Lightweight Lifesupport behind a Combat rank based wall in the form of Lori Jameson?

This makes no sense... Explorers have no talent for combat skills... Ok Ok fair call I have no talent for combat there probably are expolrers who are Masters of Combat but all I want to do is explore the stars... To do that I apparently have to kill thousands of people...

It makes perfect sense if the developer's aim was to get people out of their little niches within the game and get them to try out different aspects that are on offer.

I went out to the California Nebula for the Alliance.

I kept going for Palin.

Because they want players do different stuff and experience the game, go out of their comfort zone. And its nothing new in elite, some most important combat mods are behind mining and 10 000 ly trip of same loading screen over and over again and copy pasted systems after each other.

And most that jameson has are combat related stuff. In combat reduced weight of modules give more speed and agility for ship. Its important in combat, but for exploration those give more jump range and in game jump range doesn't have anything to do with how good the ship is at the exploration. So it make sense that light weight sensor are behind combat engineer as they are more useful for combat ships.

And i would respectfully point out that there are other ways to get lightweight life support than through Jameson. Im still not dangerous and far from it. it makes only a small difference anyway...

Lightweight isn't only for explorers. Some people just want speed. Still, it's unfortunate that we have so many hoops to jump through for some things. Trying new things can be fun, but I think most of us already did that. That's why we stick to what we love.

these mods are not for explorers (only). any profession can benefit from them, and most notably combat.

none required. combat rank is only a measure of the hours you have sunk into npc duck shooting.

now, if you are put off by the grind ... that's another topic!

:D

i went to rosette, passing through orion, witch head, barnard's loop, and seagull and thor's helmet on my way back, and had quite a blast. it's a very different galaxy for me now, will do again!

Remind me what was their advertised motto. "Blaze your own trail"? Now please, someone rationally explain to me how those two statements are not contradictory...

I can relate to OPs point of view. I don't like combat either, I had my share of space shooting in my youth and now I seek something more sophisticated than quick eye and fast hand coordination. With age I lean towards more quiet activities. And while at it I still want to make my performance better. But hiding upgrades behing combat wall means I won't be getting them.

Options are good. Forcing them is not.

Why are combat related engineering mods locked behind...

...mining walls
...exploration walls
...trading walls
...rares trading walls

I wasn't good at or interested in any of that, yet I had to do it to engineer my combat ships.

Mabye getting people to try out stuff they usually don't do is precisely the point. :)

why do people need to travel 5kly for better thrusters?

it goes both ways, and you dont need lightweight stuff to make exploration better, 1 or 2 extra ly doesnt make it better.

You can still blaze your own trail, but by doing so you chose to not get some other stuff. What is the point of Blazing your own trail if it doesn't have effect to your character. If you could get everything by just doing one stuff blazing your own trail would have no meaning at all. Blazing mean you choose what you want to do and that open you paths and close some others. Ability to do what you want doesn't mean you can unlock/get anything by just doing that.

Role playing is boring and has no meaning if choices you make don't have any impact or consequences.

I can sorta relate in that I always ignored the rngeers anyway...this simply gives me a more valid reason even though I technically never actually needed a reason in the first place. However, FD no doubt have applied the logic of forcing one into roles and aspects that otherwise simply don't hold my interest, so I do understand why...so I'll continue to ignore them entirely.

The grind itself really doesn't bother me in the slightest, my reasons were simple really...don't like the bubble an don't think the rng mechanics are worth the hassle tbh. None the engineers I know have ever relied purely on luck so its literally impossible fer me toaccept they do rely on luck a thousand odd years in the future...realy doesn't make sense in my mind, but whaever...they all in the bubble along with all the methods of gathering the materials. the bubble incidentally, is the last place in this game that I wanna be so...tis a life without rngeers fer me.

No big loss...basically, nothing has changed and nothing will change, especially not when the hassle to get them actually increases ^

That aim would be acceptable. But requiring combat rank of Dangerous is way beyond just "trying out" combat. And that's not the only problem here.

But they're not.

Bill Turner can lighten your life support, and all he asks for is 50 miserable tons of bromellite.

Granted, Lori can do it better, and you don't need to be an Elite combatant to gain access to her. You can be an Elite trader or even an Elite Explorer.

I sort of agree here.. I'd think the threshold one might need for improved thrusters might be something like:

Exceed X Speed X number of times in normal space.
Or "Successfully land on the X+1 G planet"
Because that's really what thrusters are used for - traversing normal space.

I could see linking distance traveled to grade of FSD more than thrusters.

Lori is locked behind the Founder/Elite wall too. So just pick Combat to max out first. It's only 2 more ranks past Dangerous.

Only 2 ranks past dangerous? ONLY?!?! You are aware that rank increase in this game is not linear. As a result, getting those last two ranks can take nearly as long as it took to hit dangerous in the first place.

Actually, if I remember right, 0% Dangerous is only 1/4 of the way to Elite. 0% Deadly is only 1/2 way to Elite.

I didn't know the exact math, but I did know that the increase was exponential or geometric. Just not linear. So I guess that just getting to deadly from dangerous takes as long as getting to dangerous, and getting to elite would be even longer than that.
