Explorer Question....

Hey explorers,

Do earth like and other "nice" planets look like earth in the system map before you scan them, or do you have to go and scan a planet before it's type becomes clear and it gets it's proper "icon" in the system map?

They look like ELP's in the system map. Hard to tell Water Worlds from ELP's sometimes.

You do not need to scan it first.

The icons on the system map are the same before and after a detailed scan. (Using the Advanced Discovery Scanner for the initial scan, I cannot comment for the lesser scanners)

It is possible to make a pretty good guess as to what a planet is before you have to go and look.

Great thanks, I have been finding lots, and lots of uninspiring balls of ice recently out in the col 132 sector on my way to VY Canis Majoris

Check out the Explorers forum, there's a great post in there about how to use planetary sounds on the system map to help identify what type of planet it is. Planet types do not always exactly match what the graphic is...

You may find this Picture helpful to identify certain celestial bodies.

Hi,

Yes, they do look Earth Like, although I find from time to time that I end up scanning one that I think is Earth Like/Terraformable and turns out not to be and vice versa.

This Visual Guide should help: -

Ice planets are usually quite easy to spot in the system map (they are either completely white or, in M-class systems, pink/white. You'll find the most Eartyh-likes in G-class or F-class systems, and quite a lot of terraformables in A-class systems (since they tend to have large habitable zones). Skip the M-class systems when you can, they rarely hold anything of value.
