Explorers Bad Days (Share yours!)

We all have them.

Those days where things just don't go our way. Maybe where we take a risk which doesn't pan out at all well.

Mine, recently, was what I would consider a one way jump. By this I mean jumping into a system where in order to get out I must scoop. Happens a lot in a clipper and as long as I have enough fuel for a long supercruise I'm generally OK.

Not this time, oh no.

This time the deceptively large M class star (solar radius over 1 anyway) was having a nice cuddle up against the giant carbon.
Close as in it was inside the corona.

I had to scoop from that...

Few fast passes, I got enough fuel. Then got addicted to risky refueling and went for full tank!

Was a fun evening exploring though!

Post your bad days too :) :)

That is a very interesting gotcha. I have never thought of that! Do you remember the system name, CMDR?

My worse day was a couple of weeks ago. I was 18 kly out on a trip intended to take me 20 kly along the Perseus Arm. Up until then everything was fine.

Then the dreaded moment of inattention (I'm looking at you iPhone update screwup!) and I popped out of supercruise around a star. Modules take some damage, the hull goes to 98%. But, its not that big a deal. I expect this to happen now and then... if anything I was surprised I had gotten so far without a minor accident. Next step: use the AFMU. There as a slight problem here as I'd never actually used one before. So I am fiddling with the controls, watching some numbers go up while the AFMU ammo went down. Turning broken things to repair and then off and then back on. I wasn't too worried, and in fact didin't even turn off the music I was listening to while doing this.

Somewhere along the line I turned off lifesupport.

Only by accident did I pop back to the main forward view. I saw my Oxygen level was at 3 minutes and a few seconds.

I jumped back to modules and turned on life support as quickly as possible. But the damage was done. Not to the ship, but to me. The idea that I had traveled for weeks and was within minutes of blowing up - due to my own stupid idiocity - left me physically shaken. I took a deep breath and considered. Had I been closer to the bubble I would have headed straight back, but at 18 kly, I was so close to my goal of 20... and the extra few kylies was not going to matter. So I pressed on. Everything would be fine.

It wasn't.

There was still a little damage to my FSD and Thruster, but they were at 92 and 93 or thereabouts. Maybe that caused it. Or it was psychological. But every other time I popped out of hyperspace my ship accelerated. I was throttling down in the countdown, that wasn't the issue. But when I popped out in front of the star the ship was not slowing to 30 km/s. Instead it was going a small fraction of c, and I had to dive out of the way. Maybe this was all in my head, maybe I was seeing the rolling motion of the stars and in my agitated state just thought the ship was accelerating.

Finally I stopped. Took a break. Checked up on how to use the AFMU and finished the repairs. (Well, not to life support, I am not touching that!)

Thus far everything has been back to normal. I made it out to 20 kylies - a distance was I was calling the "wall," as in "i just need to get to the wall, then I can turn back." And I even found an ELW out there. At the moment I am on the return journey about 10 kly from home.

I have played since late December and this incident is the one that sticks out. Was I crazy? Was the FSD malfunctioning? I don't know. I just want to get home.

That's incredible! I love challenges to our skill and determination like that! With with will to survive driving us. It's so incredible that it's permadeath, and that the trips are so long and full of all kinds of unexpected things like this that can go wrong.

As for mine, it's more due to pilot error. I was tired, returning from the roof above sol, and while heading toward a ring system, I opened the galmap. Never read the map while driving! I crashed into the rings at speed, my canopy cracked and that deep unsettling cold numbness of fear set over me.

See it, and what happened next here: https://youtu.be/Ig4BBreVXHQ?t=1172 (link takes you to the right spot in the video)

Haven't really got a risky story, but have some +rep for taking risks out in the black !

Cheers man! I guess I'm glad I'm not out here for the credits! The other night I was looking for roids to land on!

I'm a bad explorer, I have a habit of logging nothing useful. *goes to sit in a corner facing the wall*

On the plus side, that lighting does make your Clipper look good.

yes indeed, nice image

Cheers guys. Not going to lie, I tired really hard to take photos without the clipper in them but the selfie cam keeps coming back. She is very pretty...

Very bad Juju discussing bad days for explorers......Bad Juju indeed :D

I'll now stricken this thread from my conscience.

Please don't.
Our experiences are so varied and different that we can all maybe learn something from each other. Our bad days documented now can save you from having a similar bad day.

Although mainly ignore mine. I'm an imperial idiot. :D

Cheers my friend, and respect for sharing. You did well there, those pesky planetary rings sneaking up on you like that.
Should be lines up and shot.

Are you running trackir? Just love how galaxy map looked for you.

Thanks for sharing that one, your ship was willing you on. She wanted to scoop, to jump, or to faceplant into a neutron star!
But you are on the level again, keep it safe out there!

Nice reply to everyone, kudos to you my thoughtful friend. And thanks!

Nope, Oculus Rift. Love it
