Explorers, do you self destruct?

That's the first I've heard of such a thing. Please provide a link to this reference. I've been travelling across the galaxy for almost 5 weeks in a Sidewinder. I'm 38,000ly from Sol beyond the core. It would be nice to know if there was a station that I could stop at and get repairs. Does anyone know of any stations beyond colonized space?

First I've heard of it too.

there are exploration stations in remote locations according to galnet, im guessing these might be funded by some factions that get a lot of data, they might only provide exploration comm goals, and demand food and maybe supply fuel and be basic affairs but they are an interesting idea.

I think those are actually the candidate systems for expansion by station construction as per the new community goals from 1.1 onwards.

As for the OP question: no, I don't self destruct if I can help it. Exploration is as much an endurance test of survival as it is a voyage of discovery.

Exactly. My focus when attempting to cross the galaxy in a sidewinder was the challenge of survival and less about discovery (those of you who follow my stream know exactly what I mean). It's PVE in it's purest form. For me, the credits and the discovery are just a bonus. The true glory is in the survival. #FTDG

... and they are not exactly remote: the candidates had to be 150LY-300LY from occupied space.

The whole idea is you bring back the information and sell it.
Not necessarily - the point might be to see new sights and go where no one's been before and die a happy death on the surface of a distant Earth-like world, eaten by the local carnivores, or - more likely - killed by the local bacteria.

But, yes, I doubt most people would go on a long journey planning to kill themselves off at the end of it.

Even if there were - I have no knowledge of them existing - they would certainly not be _that_ far out. More like 100-500ly would make logical sense (they have to receive support from the civilisation, after all)

I would never self destruct. The way back is part of the journey. And of course all the stars, planets you surface scanned first will have your name on them if you manage to sell the data (before others do). The money is not much that you get from the scans, that's the least of my concerns, but why throw away credits? :)

If and when you travel far out ( not just a 1000 ly, but lets say 10, 000ly +) make sure the route back is different, then the route there was, this way you will have more systems to discover and more new thinks to see. exploring is not about money making it is about the adventure and enjoying the beauty of this galaxy.

A repair service would be fun though or an ability to drop of explorer "bases or packages", where you can drop of your data and repair, you still would have to get the data from their when you die butt still it is stored somewhere you can get it back when you die,

To be honest, I don't think I could retrace my steps back along a journey spanning over 4,000 systems even if I tried. It's a challenge to retrace 1,000ly much less +60,000ly. In other words, I doubt I'd see the same systems even if I tried to follow the same route.

I met an explorer, once, who did a trip half that long. And partway through, the air-scrubber system in his ship started to malf and he was stuck in reeking body-odor until he didn't notice it any more. Then, he came accustomed to it. Then, he came to like it. Meanwhile, the moisture made his entertainment center's data store malf, so all he had was an ancient entertainment called "3's company" - which he memorized.

You can occasionally find him in the bar where the explorers hang out in Lave. He's the one who smells -- you can't miss it, really -- and quotes constantly from ancient situation comedies.

Indeed, I think that might be a fairly common misconception... you can safely log out while you're not in combat. I'd guess the OP thought otherwise too.

It took me weeks to figure this out. All those arguments with my wife because "I have to dock first" while in a 200,000 Ls trip to a station could have been avoided.

I haven't been in a station in 5 weeks... and I play everyday lol. The nearest station from me is over 40,000 ly away, about 3,000 systems from me. Exploring would be impossible if I had to dock before I logged out.
