Explorers: fastest routes or economical routes?

I'm wondering what other explorers out there use. I use fastest routes because I can get to destinations faster, but I can see the value of using economical routes for making more discoveries and for better fuel efficiency. So, which do you guys use?

i turn off both and plot my routes when i am say in a neutron fields and want to scan certain stuff.

i use fastest to get where i am going, economical if i want to scan as much as i can in an area, and both off for targeted plotting and scanning.

4800 systems scanned under my belt if that counts for anything and so far 48000 jumps completed i live my life in supercruise.

Neither. I usually plot manually - since that avoids the brown dwarfs and M4 VABs with a string of icy planets. I do use it now and then when the stars are sparse, and invariably use fastest

Fastest route to a certain area or Nebula, than manual plotting. Exception is Neutron/black hole fields, I'll plot 1000LY routes in Econ mode.

I go fastest route to a target area of space (avoiding whole sectors of non-scoopable stars) and then manually plot each jump within a grid of space rather than travelling in a line. Filtering by star class shows blocks of space which contain different concentrations of types of star (depending on what things you're searching for). I found about 10 ELWs and 60 water worlds in just one small area of space by using this strategy. Most efficient way to explore imo.

I switch between depending. I'll opt for fastest if possible, but if my tank is half or under and there hasn't been a scoopable star for awhile, economical will improve my chances of getting one. Still haven't had to call the Fuel Rats. (knock on wood)

Once you know what you're looking for when exploring, there isn't much need to go economical though. Instead of stopping at every system to take a look, you begin hunting certain system types for better money

Yeah, fastest if going to a destination, then manually plotting, with Economic on

Fastest coming home, but someone times you make you best finds homewards bound, so embrace the temptation to detour

I use eco routes, mostly because I have no destination...just a general direction.

When I head home (say in time for Horizons release) I will use fastest, but not before then

I agree about being back in time for horizons release, but I don't know if it's for the same reasons. I don't know if I'll get horizons when it's released, and even if I do I'm not sure I'd want to be involved in whatever happens at merope. But if horizons triggers the start of witch-space interdictions, I don't want to be out in the black, exploring. If I were to get interdicted and killed by thargoids while carrying around 10 million credits worth of cartographic data, I'd probably punch a hole in my screen.

If there is some specific system I want to get to, I use fastest. But most of my exploration is on economical routes. Sometimes I also individually select my destinations on the star map, instead of using the route planner, if it suits my goals.

How do you plot a course manually? I didn't know it was possible to choose what systems your route takes you through.

Plotting a course manually means you do it one system at a time. If you're going to spend time detail scanning bodies in a system the extra time it takes to chose your next system is a minor consideration especially if you manage to avoid most of the 'boring' systems.

Well currently when you're close to the core, the route planner barely works. So I guess manual :(
There is a trick about using exact multiples of your jump range https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=151389&highlight=magic+number

After almost 14 thousand systems and 360kly traveled, I can say the only time I've used economical plotting was near the core. It just seams unfathomable to travel long distance without fastest route, as it already takes me roughly an hour to do 1kly.

For me, it entirely depends on how far I need/wish to travel and how much game-time I have available. I use both, routinely.

I leave it on fastest route just so i get to see where i can jump to.

I generally fly a thousand or two LY out, then start bouncing around F types in the region, not heading in any direction in particular. With additional fuel tanks i don't pay much attention to speed, distance, or fuel used.

I raced all the way to Sag A with fastest route plotting. as soon as I got to where I wanted to be, I came the economy way home to get the trade data up.

Not sure if I agree with the route plotting at the center... I made a spreadsheet to work out the stuff I needed to know for that and still, plotting to totally random-distanced systems worked better, with some plots happening as fast if not faster than in the home bubble. -- I landed what the spreadsheet thought was perfect distance away for one plot... ended up plotting 20Ly further than Sag A and stopping when I got to the super-massive black-hole.
