Explorers, how do you keep safe when you step away from the PC?

As far as i know, you will never encounter anything or have any contact with NPCs when in a remote location out of SC. As far as i've seen, NPCs will never drop out of SC to attack you if you are not in an active location (ie: not near any sort of mining, nav beacons, stations, etc). This applies even in the center of civilized space.

Can't say the same for players. If your low energy wake is still active, they could drop into your instance and attack you. Once your wake is gone, i don't think they could even do that since they would have no means of locking onto you.

Wow, finding someone else that deep in space.... indeed, that's a highly unlikely thing to happen. What's really eerie is that neither pilot tried to kill the other...

Well, the latter isn't really surprising. The kind of player that kills random strangers on sight and the kind of player that embarks on long journeys of over a week duration where any mistake that results in ship destruction will lose everything gained during that time are pretty separate.

Low energy wakes seem to be held client side. IF you drop out of SC before another player joins your instance, they will not see your wake at all.

I drop out of SC, full throttle with FA off and then turn off modules to get my temperature down which lowers my signature as frost appears on the screen. I then know I am relatively safe from players as I am far enough away from my exit point and will be hard to pick up on scanner.

Even better if you drop out of SC in deep space away from celestial bodies as there is a bug with the Wake Scanner that will not allow players to drop out on your SC wake even with a wake scanner.

i will do exactly sa written by Tenshi, I will drop from SC, give myself a boost, go FA off and turn off all moduels except life support. not got myself shot up yet... even in the core systems

You don't use a wake scanner to lock onto a low power wake. All you have to do is select it and get within safe disengage range, speed and orientation, then drop supercruise.

You need a scanner to drop into the same instance though and you can't do that in deep space.

Neat thread, I like stopping (or as close as) next to a star and refueling while I have something to do. 2 birds right?

Dangerous, as NPCs or players might take the moment to attack you. There is one trick that apparently works against NPCs though, and that is while scooping point your ship away from the sun. The NPC will then either fail to get behind you (or if they do they will get too close to the sun and either overheat or else hit the wall as it were and fall out of SC, thereby foiling their interdiction attempt.

The ONLY thing you need a wake scanner for is to follow a high power wake from one system to another. Please note, neither I nor Commander Trinix had wake scanners, and yet we were able to get into the same instance in deep space. He flew away from the star to a clear area to drop out of supercruise. I then dropped on his low power wake to bring us into the same non-supercruise instance for the other photos we took of each other.

Here's a photo that Trinix took

Safety in deep space when exploring.

I do too things, if I am away for a while I log out the the menu, if it is only a little while I find a nice empty bit of space away from any bodies, drop my supercruise speed to min and exit to normal space before moving of a safe distance from my exit point.

Usually no one bothers you as you are in your own instance but it is best to have the sound up just in case.
