Explorers...know a lot..

The Black and the bubble are, I feel, pretty easy to catch onto.
From what I can tell the bubble is where all the main factions/powerplay stuff are(When I look at the powerplay map I can see a big bubbly bubble after all). I have no clue what the Black is, though, and there are a few other slang words that I've seen tossed around that didn't really click for me.

I did find the one thread that explains all the acronyms such as ELW, and I checked a few other threads like Kat's one that showed all the different planet types and stuff...

But I still feel like there's this dense wall between a new player and a proper Explorer. Like this vast amount of background information you all know instinctively due to experience. This was painfully obvious to me when I read a thread earlier that was filled with slang words, acronyms, and people congratulating each other for things that left me scratching my head.

How long does it take to really get to know the game like the proper explorers? And what threads do you think are MUST READ if you want to be one?

Hm, let's see...
The old bubble: inhabited systems centered around Sol.
The new bubble: inhabited systems centered around Jaques station.
The black: everything else.

As for other stuff, if you want to be a proper explorer, then I recommend you start with the drinking game. I'm biased of course, but I think it should be stickied. Once you're through with it, you'll achieve the necessary wisdom to better understand it all.

To be a proper explorer you need two things: a ship and a destination.
Just go out there and do your thing. In my opinion there is no "must read" thats all just additional info and knowledge that isnt neccesary to read up just yet.
I didnt know about all the things either when i first departed for my first exploration trip. And i still dont know many things despite being a Pioneer and being part of two big Explorer Expeditions.

If you want to explore, just do it. Pick a pretty Star or Nebula and then go for it.
But dont forget the Fuel Scoop and the Spacemadness pills :D

The OP's question is not just about how to explore though, but how to really get to know the game like "proper explorers". I don't like that term, but I think this question could also be put as how to get to know Elite's universe better, to which there are two answers:
1. Look at the galaxy map, check out places you are curious about, and go there
2. Try to get a better understanding about how Elite's universe is made up, which requires some understanding of astronomy and how we think the Stellar Forge works.

For the former, a handy aid is the Galactic Mapping Project. For the latter, Jackie Silver's Decoding Universal Cartographics thread is one of the most important threads to read, but it's not a light read really. It should be stickied too.

Welcome!

I think I've been around the block a bit, but lots of things I read about on these forums leave me scratching my head as well. But that may be a wall of dense in my head.
For what it's worth, I once wrote a story about exploring without much slang:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/236607-Space-madness
I have since come down from the trip and experimented with some other stuff, like passengers. Seeing how they jumped ship at the slightest bit of combat, maybe I'm not cut out for this bubble stuff.

Also, Katejina, come back!

Welcome!

First off, as others have said there's really no such thing as a 'proper' explorer. All you really need is a good ship, a good fuel scoop, a few other bits and bobs...and an urge to be 'out there'. That last one is the most important. People have gone out in literally every type of ship (most of them have even returned :) ) but you really need to have the 'bug' to stay out there long term, and you won't know if you have it until you try.

The way I did it was initially in a Cobra MKIII, and I made several jaunts outside the bubble to get a feel for it. 1,000LY, then 3,500LY, then longer. I got enough to buy and equip an Asp, set off, and haven't been back in the bubble since (although I bounce into Jaques Station in Colonia every now and then).

It's tricky to know what to tell you...it's not that hard to survive out there, but there are no hard and fast rules either (other than the aforementioned fuel scoop - oh, and an AFMU unit or two. And an ADS and a DSS obviously).

All I can say is feel free to ask away...that's what we're here for.

I notice three things a lot.
Beagle Point, Sol, and Jaques Station

Why are they so consistently mentioned?

What's that head-scraching thread? :D

It was one of the ones where the ugys were talking about what they've found out in the black, and they used every acronym in the book while doing it xD

Beagle Point was once the furthest system from Sol ever reached, and was the final WP of the DWE. It's kind of a symbol.

Sol is... Sol system.

Jaques Station is a wandering station that jumped 22,000 ly towards the Core, thus throwing humankind a lot farther than previously. Life is different out there.

NB: WP = waypoint; DWE = Distant Worlds Expedition; NB = Nota Bene :D

So, tell us when you find some WR or 4xNS/WD, and maybe an ELW orbiting a CS while you fly an ASPX without any HS or AFMU :D

Just hang around here for a while and play the game and it'll all become clear.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, this is one of the friendliest forums on the entire internet. Seriously, I try and tell people who don't use the game just how little flaming, noob-baiting and trolling there is in here and they don't believe that I'm talking about a real page...

If you want to go exploring then do consider installing ED Discovery.

Just to clarify further, Sol is our actual solar system (Mercury, Venus Earth, Mars etc etc). In the game it's the home of the federation and you'll need a permit to access it, which can be done by doing work for the systems the federation controls. Once you do, you'll be able to visit our planets and moons in the game! FD does try to keep it up to date with the latest information science has on our system.

Must read? Nutter's Guide

That said, a glossary of terms for those new to exploration would be a good idea. Us old lags tend to forget that we are using terminology that has grown with us over time.

Any volunteers? :D

cliffdobbs beat me by 7 minutes!

Other things you get to know as an explorer. Planet types by acronyms.
ELW = Earth-like world
TWW or WW = Terrestrial Water World.
HMC = High Metal Content
TAW = Terrestrial Ammonia World
WD = White dwarf
NS = Neutron Star
BH = Black hole

If you find a planet that's a terraform candidate, then it becomes TCTWW or TCHMC

Then there's listening to the planets in System Map to determine what kind they are by the sound they make.
I'm not joking! Different types of planet have specific sounds for specific types. If you see a nice blue and white planet out there, is it a TWW or is it an ELW?
Listen to the planet in System Map and you'll get a better idea.
