Explorers Official "Note to self"-thread

Now that most of the DW-fleet are homebound, everyone must have already some things in mind as "note to self" what comes to distant exploring. This can also help new explorers in upcoming events.
I have listed few things which i want to make better next time.

Note to self:

- Next expedition with ship capable at least 30Ly jump range (i really like the Python, but on the flip side, i missed places which i would have liked to see but couldnt reach them)
- Lose the heat sinks (8 heat sinks, havent needed a single one, if i remember right Dognosh said before the expedition that they are not needed, should have believed him.. )
- Join Discord/TS/anything (i have joined Skype and TS channels before the expedition, but as i have two kids under 3yrs, it became clear very quickly that using voice comms was just an impossibility for me)
- Make yourself useful (now i really just tagged along, but next time i must make myself more useful, im really proud of people like Rock/Fuel rats, etc and i really want to give my shot for the community if possible)

Note to self:
-Dont play Fallout when you are on a long range expedition
-Check the terrain around you when you land so you dont fall off a cliff and die horrifically
-Bring more Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters
-Dont undertake a trip as long as this in your GCSE year

Note to self: turn on shields before landing.

/\ Same!

1. "For the last time! Turn on the damn shields before landing!!!" - Forgot this 5 times in total!
2. Lose the heatsinks, chaff launches are much more important for fireworks displays at basecamp meetups!

Note to self:
- always check a planet's gravity before descending, ALWAYS
- never use the AFMU to repair in supercruise
- never let the SRV's hull get below 51%, repair ASAP if it does

Mine is paying a little more attention to the next jump. I can't tell you how many times I've run into a neutron or black hole while I was playing another game on my phone. I would literally jump in my seat every time.
I agree with the heatsinks only if you're a seasoned explorer. I definitely needed them when I first start exploring.
Only 1 AFM unit is needed.
And I honestly don't turn off my shields.

Note to self:

2 heatsinks is overkill, one is plenty

1 SRV is enough, you don't need 2

Ditch the weapons, the only time they are useful is Whack-a-rat

Be prepared

Note to self

  • Get a smaller Fuel Tank, 32 tonnes is a little too big for a Conda
  • THARGOIDS ARE COMING, the THARGOIDS ARE COMING which means guns could be a good idea...
  • Be prepared to rescue if needed. You probable won't be needed, but just in case.

Oh and I loved the chaff, so yet, having a little chaff for fun is a good idea

Note to self:

Do not attempt to fit your ship in the space between a ringed Brown Dwarf's exclusion zone and the innermost ring.

It never ends well. Not a huge amount of damage but I did it twice!

Note to self:

Do NOT let yourself get distracted while fuel-scooping.
Safe-approach orbit lines around stars you intend to scoop from are your friend.

Note to self:

Explore in an Asp next time
Heat sinks are officially useless
Dont try to land on a high g planet with no boosters
Dont enter a planets high orbit, turn off thrusters and engage AFMU
Do always make new explorer friends
Dont stay in the bubble too long

Note to self:
Pull up when the planet hits '5' - leaving it to '3' in the hope of the scan completing is folly and you will face plant
Stop moving before taking a photo planetside - 'your ship is vulnerable' includes being vulnerable to gravity!

Wasn't part of DW but this is still relevant and I got hit by it just now:

- If your Anaconda has some cargo racks, has 37.21LY jump range standard, and you're in the Formidine Rift : if you have been playing with the "cargo" setting in the Galaxy Map (which is a nice method of tuning the route plotter for shorter jumps) , remember to set that back to zero again BEFORE PLOTTING NEW ROUTES, otherwise you'll suddenly find you're apparently stuck :p

D'oh! >.<

Note to self: turn on shields before landing.

Amen to this!

Also:
- Don't drink and fly (courtesy of 3% lost to a neutron star)
- Don't get stoned and fly (it's legal where I live - courtesy of 2% lost smacking a planet)
- Don't sweat a small tank - I could have gotten a light year and a half extra jump range by dropping from a 32 to a 16 ton tank in my Asp, and still had fuel for almost 4 full jumps. I've never needed more than 4 so far in the whole trip.

Note to self:
-Just because your thrusters are A-rated, doesn't mean that 5G planet is safe
-There's no such thing as too much jumponium
