Explorers please give opinion on possible exploration mechanic

I would like to get honest feedback on a possible basic exploration mechanic. I have tried to sum up one way to detect, search, find things as an explorer as we don't currently have scanning equipment on our ships beyond planetoid scanners.

Honestly I've given up, any time I/we have attempted to suggest anything useful, like actually seeing the planets from the ADS we get such a spray of vitriol and denigration form "real" explorers who think the current implementation of "listening" to the music generated by the game while the cursor is hovering over the planetary body is the best way to do things that it's just plain not worth arguing the point. I will continue to plod endlessly across the trackless wastes of planetary bodies looking for the maybe one or two active geology areas on them until I grow weary and give up the game altogether.
