Explorers speaking out in the void

I have a few fellow exploreres as friends and we speak really infrequently - for all sorts of reasons.

WHO do you speak to and as explorers should we speak more?

We are quite interesting people in my experience = LETS TALK more :)

Any thoughts?

While I don't claim to speak for all explorer's, or even the majority, I suspect that quite a number of people who are long term explorer's are drawn to it because of our personality type.

We're not anti-social, but we do enjoy the quiet solitude of the explorer profession and I'm sure most, if not all of us have people in our friends list, and sometimes just seeing someone else's icon on the map is enough to make us feel like we're not in the game alone and that there's someone there to chat with if the moment presents itself, even if we play an entire session without chatting at all it's often enough just to know that we can.

I've had a computer since the Apple IIe days and chat has never been more than a minor means of communication for me as I prefer the slower paced long format of the forum (and UseNet before that). Personally for me in-game, I like to exchange a few pleasantries, have a little back and forth or crack a game related joke or two for a few minutes and then get back to exploring while hoping that I don't come off as rude, I do genuinely enjoy a short bit of chat, but it's not really my thing.

I've always found real-time chat to be a rather awkward way to communicate (I'm old school :), I even disabled text messaging on my phone), and then there's the issue of whether you stay "in character" for those who like to role-play when they're in the game, which I guess should be sorted out early on when chatting with someone new.

Just my random thoughts on the subject.

<snip>

I couldn't have said this better myself. As a long term, solitary explorer, I have a huge friends list thanks to the lonely explorers thread, and although I rarely start a little chat session it great to know that I can if I want to. I hesitate to begin a chat session because I don't want to intrude on another players experience.

I really enjoy watching the progress of other explorers and if anyone wants to ask a question or have a natter, I'm more than happy to engage in a little chat session. (Got to be careful though, we are probably the only profession where crashing into a sun is the most likely cause of death, and I hate to be the one that caused it for another CMDR).

Pretty much what Cmdr Reid said...except for the bit about text messages!

However, I really enjoy knowing that the Explorers' Thread exists...in my role-play world that is a sub-system of the wider communications net.

I don't know how I feel about Friends' lists. I don't know if I want to appear as a green tag on people's galaxy maps. Is that wrong?

Flying with my awkward social skills!

You can always turn the tag on or off at your choosing. That said, we'd like to know where you are though.

Not at all.

Personally I do want to appear as a green tag and I want to see others; I'm not a big fan of long conversations and I absolutely never use a mic but I like the occasional "hi, how're you doing?" exchange. :)

I like the occasional 'hi how you doing' but you can bet that as soon as I go to open, I want to take a hi res screenie.
Should we all go Mobius?

As all have said I don't like to intrude, as explorers we are loners :D
I have over 200 in my list and I get the odd hello here or there, and some longer chats too :)

Just remember, if you are in a chat and you don't hear back, then they are busy and will reply eventually !

I have only text chat, and if you want to keep a good rithm of jumps, honking, etc. chatting slows you down a lot. So usually is always good to have a little conversation but eventually explorers tend to go back to their stuff without goodbyes, which I understand a lot.

so yes, it's very good to see other in the gal map, having an occasional chatter, but then we all tend to go back head down in our cockpits.

The forum is the perfect tool for long chatting, also because explorers can always park somewhere and alt-tab the forum if they have something to say, or want to rest for a while.

i have friends in the forum I speak regularly too, but never said hi in-game, and I think exploratory have a good mutual understanding in keeping the chatter level low.

The occasional "Hi, how's it going?" I don't mind at all. I've started the odd chat, normally if I notice someone very close by or way out on the edge.

One of the good things about the Lonely Explorers list is seeing others on the Galaxy Map. As other's have said, it makes you feel a little less isolated whilst you're away from populated space.

Don't think I'd be very keen on chatting away over Comm's, never been a big fan of it, even in games where if working in a team can make it more beneficial e.g. World of Tanks etc.

I also think a lot of the time everyone out here exploring get quite focused on what they're looking at or for and switch to auto-pilot.

Exactly! That's why I haven't put my name on that list yet. I'm not afraid of playing in open or anything, it's that I want to take high res screenshots ALL the time.

Go to Sag A*. There is a guy there who doesn't talk much, but he will interact with you, mainly by shooting at you.

Paaff... Who cares about a no mark 2 minute of fame'r please don't even give him/it any air time. A two bit loser :(

Anyway - interesting thoughts from my fellow exploreres :) Thank you.

I was very worried about intruding, but I sort have come a full circle on this, If some one contacts me and I am busy I just carry on, and that CMDR WILL understand.

BUT I do welcome a voice from the black IF I AM in the mood. Let's not stop communicating, but keep understanding if there is no response :p
