[EXPLORING] Best ship?

Hello all,

What's the best ship for exploring in? The official gumph say it's the Asp, but I was curious to see what other people use?

Also, do you go for speed over anything else, or prefer a heavy gunship that can soak up the punishment whilst getting you back with the crucial first data set?

At the start, the Eagle is pretty capable. Upgrade the FSD to get you into double figure jump ranges, and learn how to evade interdictions, and how to escape with minimal / no damage should you fail to evade, and you are sorted. The main limit is availability of utility slots (just 3) so if you want shields, you only have room for fuel scoop and the disco' scanner.

It really depends on your play style. At the most basic level, you need a Basic Discovery Scanner (500ls range), and Fuel Scoop. Anything else is up to you. Feel the need to kill some pirates along the way? Weapons and defence systems are your friend. Bit of mining some of those juicy finds? Mining laser and a refinery are the tools for the job. A Detailed Surface Scanner is handy, as it does add quite a bit of Credits to your data value, come sell time. Upgrading your Discovery Scanner is handy but again, not required, as with a bit of know-how you can find most it not all system bodies however it takes a while. A good fuel scoop will make things a lot less frustrating, as scooping with the cheapest one (around 300 credits) takes an age - 18/s max intake.

The main thing that will hamper your exploring is your ships Jump Range, as once you start getting out there, the Sidewinder simply won't get that far, even with an upgraded FSD. So get a ship that's got a decent jump range, with enough internal compartments for your gear, the rest is personal preference.
