Exploring - cargo rack worth mounting?

Hi.

Just wondering whether it's worth mounting a cargo rack to go exploring. I mean, is there anything out there to pick up (on planets, for example). If it's worth it, what what size to pick?

Going to be flying an Asp, so limited for internal space.

Opinions, please.

Cheers

Only really useful if you are carrying a repair limpet controller and are planning to synthesize limpets , otherwise its just extra weight if you put anything else in it , and out exploring if you aren't salvaging anything along the way ( cant see why you would) then you wouldn't need it .

Hi Stabby_Dave,

Cargo racks have some uses for explorers in the black besides salvage.

Even if you aren't equipped with a repair limpet controller yourself, you can synthesize limpets for the Rat repairing you if things have gone that crazy for you. But you do need the cargo rack to put them in for a moment before you drop them. I'd say this more important on a expedition, where co-operation is key to success.

Also, it is still possible to find ocupied escape pods you might want to rescue.

One other use for a cargo rack in an explorer, is to "trim" your jump range. Maximum range jumps use an increased amount of fuel. You are pushing your FSD to the limit, and it becomes ineffcient, burning excessive fuel. There is a slider in the galaxy map that lets you increase the virtual mass of your ship if you have unused cargo space. If you add just 1t of virtual weight to your ship, your jumps will be slightly shorter but more fuel efficent.
If you go out exploring in a non-exploration ship (a fighter for example) this can be a very useful trick, for example if the ships fuel tank is very small (or if you've dramatically reduced your Asps fuel tank to save weight/gain range), trimming the range to stay fuel efficient may allow you to get two jumps from the tank before you must refuel. Good for those times you hit a run of unscoopables.

That said, a cargo rack is far from being essential equipment, pop one in if you've got a spare slot, the rack itself weighs nothing.

Good luck on your trip.

Always fit a small cargo rack as a minimum. You never know what you might find out there or on your way back in.

I'm on the Enigma Expedition currently. I found some cargo (and a data beacon -- still have the package for 2800cr from the Alliance) just north of the meetup on the high-G world. There was the typical stuff: Gold, Beryllium, Cryolite, Superconductors, Bootleg Liquor, etc. Nothing really worth a lot beyond the story value (it was spread over a really large area, and the drive back down with two pieces of it was fairly long... I don't have cargo space beyond that in the SRV, and that doesn't count when folds up in the ship). Similarly, a later waypoint had wreckage with a bunch of escape pods that someone found and rescued. Then there's the USS sites... some of them have data caches, occasionally a large one that's worth 150000cr. It's not really about the money though... if you're just having cargo space (and not for hull repair), then the stuff you put in it has the most value for story. You can bring supplies along for the journey, drop some cargo at Beagle Point in hopes that eventually there will be enough for a base, mine some painite from the far reaches to sell to the ultra-rich (who won't pay you any more for it... but really, exotic minerals should be made a thing).

Cheers, guys.

Now, to hijack my own thread (but still in the same vein), what about an extra fuel tank?

I'd have to ditch either the cargo rack or the AMFU, so my immediate thought is "no". I'll be all alone out there doing random exploration, so not sure whether I want to be heading out there without a repair facility.

Again, all opinions welcome.

Cheers.

AspX has quite decent fuel tank, it can jump 6 times at max distance (assuming no engineering changes on fuel consumption) which is more than enough for common exploration and enough for strong neutron usage. I would not recommend taking additional tanks as it may cause problems with route plotting.

Whether or not extra fuel is any good has long been a subject of debate. With the star class filter on the route plotter, and the ability to tell what kind of star you're jumping to (as soon as you charge your FSD), in my opinion there's little need for them. May be useful for chaining neutron star boosts, but your Asp has a pretty large stock fuel tank anyway.
