Exploring first to discover?

Hi all, im currently exploring systems and belive you are credited with the find if you are the first. Do you have to sell the data to achieve this? Also where does it show discovered by?

Yes you have to sell data. Can't help on where the tag is as I'm out in the depths of space exploring since before update. It may take me weeks if not months to get back to human space.
