So how do you go about exploring then if you can fill up your fuel tank but not your reserve? Do you just head into the black without a reserve after it's gone?

You can scoop star classes A through O, except L. Easy to remember.
Btw you don't have to move while fuel scooping, simply sit in range, refuel and scan the star at the same time.
Currently the system map lags behind a system, open the galaxy map first, then the system map to get data for the correct system.
And lastly a simple way to ensure you always enter a new system safely (at zero throttle) is to start the debug camera before the jump countdown starts.

Learn to love fuel scooping and just keep an eye on your guage. The blue segment will be the fuel deduction for your targetted destination. Remember to keep enough fuel to reach a scoopable star.

Be sure to watch your 6 while scooping. NPCs like to try interdiction while you're feeding the beastie.
It's already been said, but the reserve tops up from the main tank when it runs down. You just notice 1t of fuel disappear from the main tank and your reserve is filled again.
You need to ensure you've always got some fuel in the tank so you can make a jump back the way you came if necessary.

Please do tell. I have a Cobra, and I am tooled up for multi role at the minute doing a bit of everything but all the while I am thinking about my great sojourn. Might still chase credits for an Asp but I do like my Cobra. It's like I know where I am in a Cobra if you see what I mean after trying the SW of course, an Eagle, a Viper a Hauler and an Adder. I keep coming back to the Cobra so how have you tooled yours up for deep space exploration?

I found that out the hard way. I have learned how to read my instruments and watch them like a hawk. Doesn't always work mind but I don't often get caught out these days.
