Exploring help: Ho do you hunt for scoopable stars?

So, I've been ignoring the itch for a while, whilst building up enough stash for a fully kitted asp.

Now though, with A rated equipment and enough in reserve to buy a second asp if needs be, I thought I would go sight seeing for a bit.

Ended up in Tau Ceti after visiting a nearby system for my last A module so instead of heading back to my outer edge trade routes, I thought I would go see the biggest star in the Milky Way.

It's my first real venture out of populated space, and I've not yet had the pleasure of running out of fuel before. I've come close a few times though.

In Col 285 sector at the moment, and I'm currently blindly jumping in a straight line, scanning away and when I my fuel is down to a 1/4, I start to do small jumps, hoping for a scoopable star.

Done this twice now, but it seems like a huge gamble.

How do you professional explorers find your fuel#/

Just check in the galaxy map hoovering cursor above stars ... even easier with 1.1, just deselect non wanted stars of the show by colors filter in the view tab of the galactic map.

If you're less than a quarter of a tank full, just go and filter the map by star type.
OABGKFM are all scoopable.

1) Know your scoopable stars, that is types A, B, F, G, K, M and O.
2) Use the route planner. Look at your route, with the 1000 LY planner it is obvious when you are going to run out of fuel (the line goes from sold to dotted), make sure you either have a star you can refuel from before you run empty or there is a star you can deviate to.
3) Unless you need to empty fuel for a big jump, scoop whenever you can, less chance of running out by accident.

Imo FD slightly dumbed down exploring with the stellar filter, as the galaxy map now displays the primary's stellar type even if you have never visited the system and have no information on it. I suppose that FD took the view that type is observable at virtually any distance, although that doesn't explain being able to see the type of stars on the far side of the galactic core :S

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. IMO, the Galaxy map should offer a best guess for stars that are 1000s and 1000s of light years away, and occasionally, be wrong.

I had no idea you could filter the galaxy by star type...

Thanks for the tips.

Just after I posted, I had a long run of scoopable stars so never dipped below 2/3 until I got to the big girl.

Searching by star type does seem to make this a little safer. Glad I had the thrill of gambling the last 10ly of fuel on jump to an unknown star in the hope she could fill the tank.

Time to head home, the cargo of coffee will be just about roasted by now.

I never really looked for them, when I'm around half tank and at a star I can scoop then I scoop. Should I go under half tank I would start looking, but I never had to.

Either this or a return to the "If you haven't visited it, you don't know the stellar type" rule. A sort of ironman explorer mode.

The information on star types was always available in the info panel, the new filter just makes it easer to display. Stars outside of our own system have been classified, but I agree that maybe the data should be sketchier the other side ofthe galaxy.
