Exploring Makes Me Want...

...to buy a second account to participate in the CGs and what not. Hard to do that from thousands of light years away (even though I'm only a few hundred away right now, I have no plan to come back any time soon).

It's tempting isn't it? I'm 000's of ly away from Sol and have been since February. I see all of these cool CG's, wings updates and soon we'll have PP and here's me, tootling around on the other side of the galaxy looking at balls.

The thing is, I'm running on a bootcamped Mac, which means that I could have two totally hassle free accounts on the same physical machine. What stops me from doing it though is that I worry that one of my commanders will languish and be unused after a while.

I'm still fairly new to the game so I've tried a bit of everything. Exploring was one of the biggies that I've been wanting to try but I didn't have the patience to save for an Asp (plus kit) or something, so I'm shooting around the galaxy in an Adder with top spec gear. Now, I'm enjoying it immensely (plus I know I'll be getting bundles of cash when I get back), but I don't think I'm an explorer at heart. I'm taking an off the beaten path track to Sgr. A (I shot diagonally up from a minor system for about 400Ly, now I'm heading in Sgr. A's general direction). It took about 500Ly from Sol before I got to a point when nothing has been discovered. Lots of T Tauri and Red Dwarf with metal rich planet and gas giants with atmospheric life around here.

But yeah, I'm not an explorer at heart...I shall go to Sgr. A and potter about until PP comes out, then I shall shoot straight back to populated space, cash in, buy and kit out whatever I can afford and start getting involved in the CG's and PP stuff.

One thing, if I didn't quite realise how big the galaxy was before exploring, I certainly do now. You plot out this 1000Ly journey for the evening, zoom out to full galaxy view and it's barely a dent...awesome.

CMDR, if you can make it to Sag A* and back in an adder, you certainly have what it takes to be an explorer! I find that I can't stay in civilized space for very long, once I have been out there.

Seems to me to be a great ship for exploring. Cheap with a good jump range when stripped of cargo bays and unnecessary. It's kitted out with A grade jump drive, distributor and power plant, and enough of a shield (D grade) that I shouldn't worry about making a stupid docking mistake on the return journey. No weapons (I shall make the return in Solo to make sure I'm not blown up for kicks). I think it kicks out ~23Ly range which isn't too pokey. Fuel scoop is also A grade and fills up super fast.

I realise I'll have to be careful about fuel the nearer to the centre I get and plan my journeys. At the moment, almost every star is one I can fuel at. I'm assuming there are more T Tauri near the centre...

Because I've travelled so far 'north' of the galactic plane, the stars are thinly spread, but I'm having no problem forging a path toward the galactic centre. It'll obviously thicken up the closer I get. I'm through the thickest part of our spiral so it may start thinning out some more...we shall see!

The exploradder is great! It's quite cheap to kit, turns well in supercruise for scanning, and just oozes character! The only thing you have to be careful of is that due to its relatively wimpy FSD (class 3), even minor changes in weight result in big reductions to jump range. I like to kit my adder with no shields or heat sinks for that reason, but I guess I like living dangerously!

(27.25 ly range, 3.5 million cost).

Yeah, I sacrificed ~5Ly range for 2 x Heat Sink Launchers, ARU and D class shields. Mind you, if you're scanning as you explore, range isn't really an issue. It's if you're more interested in distance than scanning systems that it matters...and I'm here to make money as well as heading for Sgr. A just to say I've been there. Not in any hurry!

But the balls are so PRETTY!

And yeah, I agree with that concern. =-\

I couldn't play an adder. The offset pilot seat REALLY bugs me (same for the Cobra III, though I suffered in that one long enough to get a bigger ship, at least the driver's seat was on the left like I'm used to). CGs are a pretty 'quick' way to gain money. I grinded pretty hard in Quivira and earned enough to kit out an Asp.

I was 18,000 lys out when a graphical bug caused gravitational lensing to no longer work for me.

Since it was a trip out to see sag a this rendered my whole trip useless. Took 8 hours of straight jumping to get home.

Oh well, at least I made 30 million in the time I could have made 300 million...

The Adder was fun to pilot; it felt like a minivan in space. The problem for me is the limited window view. Even if you are mostly scanning from a distance while exploring, once in a while I like to get up close and take in the views.

I totally forgot about how closed is the cockpit! That's one of my favorite things about the Asp. I GET TO SEE EVERYTHING!

This is one of the issues with the game. Or maybe it is one of the GREAT things about the game, depending on how you want to look at it. You are stucking touring the galaxy getting to witness black holes and stuff, and are missing out on all these local things. I on the other hand get to participate in all these cool local things... but am missing out on all the glorious sights out in the galaxy. Pick and choose.. pick and choose.

Do it! I did.

I spent a week getting my alt into a vulture and now the CGs are done I'm back with Ydiss, 14k ly from Sol.

I just discovered my first Earth like, tonight, as well :)

Best of both worlds.

I feel the same way- shot off to sag a, started exploring on the way back. Great fun but I do miss all the fun stuff I see my son doing back in the populated areas. So now I am not exploring much, just blasting homeward only scanning at refueling stops. I have a couple of earth likes, loads of water and ammonia planets so far so as long as I don't stuff it into the weeds on the way back I'm okay with the results of this trip.

Another reason I want to get back is that i forgot to kit out any heat sinks for this voyage and have been caught once in an uncomfortable situation.

Time me to do some shooting and trading maybe when I get back then off for another exploration trip I suppose.

I have a second account that I regularly clear save.

Very handy to have about to blow off some steam when out exploring on my main account!

I got back from Sag A about 2 weeks ago, pottered about doing a little combat, back out again - around the orion area, lots to see and not too far away:
