Exploring Now & Questions of the Future

Recently I was listening to some discussions on the upcoming Engineers patch. As I haven't seen anyway to get an A6 Fuel Scoop into a Diamondback Explorer I can't say I'm interested, but my disinterest has peaked.

During the discussion I've heard that there may be some sort of drone threat incoming. The idea my friends have been passing back and forth is that someone has been taking human ships and putting them back out there with fake human pilots. The first reaction all of us had to this was, "Coldfire Trilgoy! It's the Rakh!" Basically the Rakh were a humanoid ape-like species that upon encountering humans for reasons that make sense within the book series end up evolving into a kind of alpha predator that kills humans. However, the Rakh essentially appear human until you get so close you notice every single bit of skin you are seeing is actually extremely dense fine fur that lays against them such as to appear human. This idea fell apart about the time someone then said, "Nooo! Drone Swarms, EVE," upon which all of us shuddered. Then someone else said, "Cylons!" And we all began to get very giddie excited.

The excitement became even bigger as some digging found these two videos:

1. Is possibly some sort of graphical error as it seems to be the same shape the Asp. Or... not.
2. Legitimately looks like a ship of some sort.

Following these rumors the conversation shifted to, "Didn't the devs say something about explorers soon no longer being able to consider going out unarmed as a feasible option?"

I thought about this and then realized this means we're no longer going to get to be explorers. We're getting forced into combat. Which killed all of the building hype I had felt for June and buying Horizons entirely for me.

So, my questions are these...
- I'm in about two weeks out into the Perseus Arm from the Bubble. I wasn't planning to come back before July. Should I?
- If we're going to get attacked now spontaneously by RNG do you think that will effect those of us already forever away from the bubble?
- Can we avoid the RNG monster by not buying Horizons?

To give a flavor to my thinking I'm the kind of person who liked Babylon 5 when the Shadows were still rumors and Alex Jones wasn't president of the universe. I'm not afraid Elite is suddenly going to became Radio Jesus, but I am sort of skeptical the RNG is capable of simulating the realism of an alien threat that doesn't end up in the same vein of jokes as the crashed sensor arrays have become.

Other examples:
- Are we going to get the American version of the TV show The Bridge of the original Swedish version?
- Personally I can't stand the American version

- Will we end up with Jaws where the shark is mostly implied or something where everyone with video record has supplied us with visuals of every part of randomized content the game can hope to provide?
- Personally I'm for the video 1. and 2. scenarios where the shark is implied. There are "glimpses," ever increasing dimensions to the lurking horror, because what we can imagine from the implied will always be more satisfying than the revealed monster.

Lastly:
- Do you think solo-mode is going to turn into RNG-NPC-PvP mode?

Anyway, I'm just trying to decide to come back to the bubble and go hide until this patch is over or keep exploring at the moment. If my ship's just going to be destroyed by RNG when the patch launches I'll start heading back to the bubble now. Later I'm concerned with how this will effect exploration in the future? Is it still going to be exploration or combat with scanning on the side? So far the game is heavily focused on PvP. Doing the human-horrible doesn't really interest me. Maybe in some aside way do think it best to just get mapping done now and wait until July to start heading back to the bubble? Maybe the whole RNG thing will be over by then?

- Also, I'm fine with dying after 4 weeks into exploration so long as it is worth it. Not sure what is worth that at the moment.
-- I was about to close this out when I realized I'd type "worth it" when I meant to type, "fun". Not sure why I would supply "worth it" over "fun", but I suppose "worth it" can be quantified. I guess there's hope in all of this, however it turns out. "Worth it," can be developed. "Fun" is ambiguous.

Dunno, a bit conflicted with all this.

All I got out of that stream of consciousness was the question: What does RNG stand for? I've gone for random nasty guy. Can we start a poll?

The first video shows a known graphical glitch where a black area renders and moves across a planet's surface. Happens sometimes. I see that in-game ufology is not unlike it's real world counterpart :)
