Newcomer / Intro Exploring questions

So have decked myself out as a mini bear grylls. Headed out to Minerva, upgraded a few bits of my Sidewinder... So have upgraded shields, power plant, coupler, disc scanner, fuel scoop no cargo.... Upgraded fsd so can jump 10+ ly....

just wondering if I am doing it right tend to jump into a system land at the sun - if sun is undiscovered scan it - jump on.... Is this right... Is there a way to scan the whole system looking for other planets as the other planets tend to be bigger pay days? Many thanks in advance.....

I'm no expert, but these are the basics:

- You need a 'discovery scanner' (basic, improved or advanced); you assign this to a weapon group, fire it off within the system and it will reveal all astronomical objects in a radius depending on its quality.
- Revealed objects appear as "unexplored" in your navigation pane in the left hand ship window, and in the system view.
- Pointing your nose at an "unexplored" object for a while reveals more details of it, and the name will change to an actual name; the range of this surface scan depends on the size of an object.
- If you have a 'surface scanner' installed, you'll automatically gather additional info when you do this second scan which will sell for more.
- Apparently (I've not tested this myself), "high value" planets add more to your scan value; when you've done the initial discovery scan, look at the system map and brown or blue objects are the ones likely to be high value (metallic or life capable planets).
- You can sell your data at any station over 20ly away from the system for payment and reputation gain with the controlling faction of the station.

How do you assign the scanner to a weapon group mine seems to be an internal thing rather than a hard point as such....

and then how do you change weapon groups apologies in advance for the daft questions

go to your 'systems' tab in your cockpit (default key 4) then mess about in there till you find fire groups, some playing around there will assign it to a fire group - I wish I could be more precise but I can't remember the right thingies for the whatsit.

Cycle next weapon group is default key N.
