Exploring - Sell data at any station?

Scanners are not only for discovering unknown stellar bodies, but also for collecting research data. We didn't stop researching our solar system once we had discovered every planet, right? There's a lot more data to collect and keep up to date than merely "planet here, star there".

I guess that makes sense.

Hey, have you guys noticed the "pilot bots" doing exploration in new systems? I've watched them go from one planet to another and they have even clued me in I was missing things a time or 2. Pretty cool to have a built in assistant showing the way.

When you buy data at Universal Cartographics, what exactly do you get?

Yes, it's very nice of them to help.

My earlier post about not being able to explore after buying data appears to be in error. I was getting some funky results in earlier iterations of the game.

If you buy the explore data, you get the astronomical features without the detailed data. You can still get paid by going in for the details. It's a good investment and takes some of the guesswork out.

Pure conjecture below:

My feeling is that sometimes the cartography server just conks out and loses your scans, simple as that, no game mechanic involved.

Observation suggests that every time you enter a system, your client will effectively chat up the cartography server and ask what you actually know about the system; that could fail, in which case you may end up scanning a well-known system, producing no valuable data. There also seems to be an implicit scan (scans are also just a query to the cartography server) for a nearby star where you jump in, which sometimes takes a good while to finish. Then you can do discovery scans ("yo server, anything of interest within 500 ls?") which sometimes take a while to finish, and then you do the same game staring at the sun for extended periods of time.

Basically, every one of those steps could run into an issue and lose some of your data.

A system may list as unexplored to you, but check to see if data is available for the system to buy elsewhere. Your cartography may not be up to date. You won't get paid for exploring a system if it's already been explored but you haven't the data to hand yourself and then explore it. It's not a broken system. There's 400 billion stars to explore. It stands to reason you won't get paid for each one, if others have explored before you and been paid for the data.

That may not be entirely correct. It appears data for SOME systems will not be available for sale UNTIL someone explores it. Then you can buy the data and MAY even get paid to "confirm" the findings. I was seeing odd results earlier when I was a lot closer to player inhabited areas and some systems I bought data for and then couldn't survey for pay, but moving out to the boonies gave different results, including the ability to then resurvey the system and get paid. Still, the full mechanics aren't clear.

Very relevant note from the Gamma 2.0 notes: "Prevent system data being sold to a station if it resides in the 20LY 'close systems' bubble"

Looks like there are no more data sets to buy at my local station. My two missing sets are now up there to sell but for zero credits. Clicked on one of them and got the zero credit bug which was a bit of a heartstopper but all good now

What kind of credit returns have you guys been getting on Exploration? I scanned like 20+ objects and belts in the Herculis 110 system, which I'm fairly certain other people have explored ( but who knows ) and got about 5k for it. Can I get much higher rewards by going out deeper?

HEADS UP:

Things appear to have been somewhat addressed in Gamma 2.0. I now have a list of all my unsold systems, although most of them are selling for 0 credits, so there may still be issues. There's also an explicit requirement to be 20 ly from the scanned system to sell, which would explain a lot of my issues if it was in place in Gamma 1.05.

It wasn't there in 1.05. I happily sold in the same system in 1.05, and sometimes couldn't sell things from 100 ly away.
