Exploring the Core with Passengers

At the expense of beating a dead Thargoid, I will add my experiences with long distance passenger missions to the smoldering pile of opinions and gripes. I recently returned to Elite after a long, long time away. Having never been to the galactic core, I was pleased to discover that there were passenger missions whose destinations were close to Sagittarius A*. They gave me the perfect excuse to refit my Asp and get out into the black.

Explorers have to make their own fun, and I love that Elite is the kind of game that gives players ample opportunity to do so. I decided to try to write an in-character blog about my first time to the core, and having passengers to write about afforded me plenty of creative primer. I spent hours researching the best way to get screenshots (alt+F10 FTW!!), and the best settings for anti-aliasing. I even made batch actions in Photoshop to process the somewhat washed out screenshots! Long story short, I was having a lot of fun hopping around the stars for nearly two weeks straight.

That is until I tried to get a screenshot on a ringed planet.

I'm crazy rusty at landing, so I bumped the surface of the planet a teeny tiny bit. Of course the bump caused me to roll a bit, which resulted in a second bump. The two bumps back-to-back caused my passengers to flip out, and leave. I'm not mad about losing the 50mil in credits, but I am a little perturbed about how long distance passenger missions are setup. It seems totally unnecessary to have them get upset about being scanned (something that happened by accident when I was exploring Sagittarius A*). I would be down right furious if they aborted their mission upon returning home after 2 weeks in the black because I was scanned at the dock. What am I to do? Slip in with silent running, and hope I don't crash into the mail slot?

Long distance passenger missions should be fun, as well as challenging. Adding challenge is necessary in order to make them different from solo exploration. They should be about sharing the joy of discovering new planets and interesting celestial bodies with fellow explorers (who just happen to be NPCs). I'll offer a few ideas, and open the thread to input. I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about this mission type, as well as their experience with them. I only ask that you elaborate beyond single sentence comments.

  • Change payout structure for exploration missions to include bonuses payouts for scanning specific types of celestial bodies. For example, if your passenger is a famous geologist, they could pay a tiny bonus for scanning rocky moons or ringed planets. The bonuses could add up, and they would make the missions more focused on exploration. Alternatively, scanning things that the passengers like could be a way of improving their mood, should you do something to offend them. I'm not against making these missions challenging, I simply think that they should have challenges that are unique to this mission type, and are more balanced for long expeditions.
  • Get rid of the secretive mission perimeter. Who do these explorers think they are? Do they not want their bosses to know they're taking a working holiday?
  • Change the destination. Scanning a tourist beacon is cool for now, but I'd like to see that be more fitting with the exploration theme. I assumed that I was embarking on a data retrieval mission, not a sight seeing tour.
  • More chatting from the passengers. It would be great if every 60 jumps or so they chimed in with something fun. Stuff like "your ship has the best coffee packets!" or "zero-g makes me sleepy". Basically something to remind the player that there are other people on their ship.

Safe travels,

Great ideas, it would be nice to see them tied in with exploration more. It's a common complaint that it's not worth taking a passenger mission to the core if a ship scan can cause you to lose it all, so I would agree with removing this parameter or making those missions rarer and higher paying.

Optional stops or secondary sites could help add a bit of variation. For example, you accept a mission to Sag A*, with the option for a bonus if you hit The Great Annihilator on the way.

I'm a little less fond of the idea of passenger text chatter as the existing text chatter is, imho, repetitive and mundane. I think I would go crazy if I had to jump ~ 40KLYs listening to the same handful of comments, just look at the wedding barge chatter.

Another option perhaps for exploration missions could be that you have to actually explore and FIND the target to complete the mission? For example, someone wants to go see a binary star, and you have to find one, or they want to go on an ELW tour and you have to bring them to 5 that are at least 1000LYs from Sol.

There are lots of ways that you could flesh out these missions and hopefully FDev will look at them in their core-gameplay updates, although to be honest there are many other aspects of this game that are in need of improvements before sightseeing/exploration missions.

Great ideas here.
My first passenger mission was 31,000 LY away (Red and Green Glory). I did not hear a peep from my passenger till I made it there at which time he just said, "Great, Thank you, you can take be back to Quince now". I used the passenger as motivation for leaving the bubble but I had to make up my own stories about who he was, why was he so secretive, and if someone was out looking for him. I imagined that he was a very wealthy business person who got entangled in some bad dealings and had threats made against him and his family. This resulted in him packing up his whole family and "getting out of town" for about 3 weeks until some of the heat was gone. He could not afford to be scanned as word could get back to those who wanted to harm him. When I found ELW's or water worlds I would make sure to orbit them once or twice for the views and when I finished playing each day I would park my ship on a planet with a good view or in orbit of a visually striking planet.

Finally, I'm pretty sure my pilot developed a tad bit of space madness as they were all too good to talk to a lowly pilot, I had to talk to myself.

Not to invalidate some of the points made in your post, but...

First OP, I wonder, with 50M credits on the line, if you could have taken more precautions to keep your customer happy. What kind of shield did you have equipped and on what ship? Was that surface screenshot really necessary if your passenger didn't ask to go there?

As for the scan and hull requirements. Without them long-range passenger missions would be total gimmes. At least with those requirements it encourages a small amount of skillful gameplay. I took off last night with two long range passenger missions and, wouldn't you know it, got scanned leaving port. A heat sink and a quick dip into silent running kept my passengers anonymous and happy, and we're merrily on our way to our destinations. Bar is open for the duration of the flight, and smoking is allowed in designated areas.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Nice suggestions, OP.

I like the ideas about scanning things that will improve your passenger's mood, as well as the NPC chatter from them. Emershun FTW.

I agree, Vindelanos, that passenger missions should require special kit and load out. I like that the passenger bays are so heavy, they really cut down on your jump range. I think that there should be a difference between "solo" exploration and passenger exploration. My major gripe with the scanning requirement is that it is such a huge let down after such a long trip. Failing to avoid scans while Space Uber-ing within the bubble is less of a punishment because the mission can be completed within a short time span. Botch a mission that takes an hour; no biggie. Overlook a tiny prerequisite after 3 weeks in the black; throw PC out window.

As for the screenshots, no they're not necessary. However, one needs some vacation photos to remember the trip and pass the time. Fun is fun, no matter where you find it. :)

Well, I do agree that just as there are ways to make your passengers unhappy, there should be ways to make them happy as well, so that one little mistake isn't a total loss on such a long trip.

I also agree that there should be a lot more gameplay mechanics involved... Jump in, honk, "Hey, let's go scan A3!", or "Hey, let's go land on B1 A!"

And even banter would be nice! Come one, how hard is it to script some silly banter? And imagine if you didn't know what kind of banter you were going to get until you took off? So you only have like 1500 jumps to go, and your passenger is a total jerk and a blabbermouth :p
