Exploring with DK2 impossible (Oculus Rift)

I've decided to park up my Anaconda which was sourced after months of grinding away a number of trade routes. Figured I'd customise an Asp and head into the centre of the galaxy for a change of scenery.

But after a few 1000s LYs from home, I decided to immerse myself into the Oculus experience (which I normally only reserve for combat) but realise that using the OR when deep in unexplored space is futile.

As the galaxy map is such an important part of exploration, it's still so poorly implemented for OR use, I can't click on specific stars and if I do, looking to the info-panel on the left deactivates the focus on the star.

After a few fumbling attempts at sideways looking I decided to park the headset. It's a shame because I was really looking forward to admiring FD's rendition of the galaxy (which so far has been just beautiful) but frankly it's more of a pain than I hoped.

Anyone experienced any positive uses of the OR when exploring?

You get used to the minor nuances of the galaxy map with the OR.

My problem is I get motion sickness pretty quickly with the galaxy map, but I am fine otherwise.

Exploration is currently my highest elite status (pathfinder) and i only play in ED using the rift.

At 1st I didnt like the galmap in VR but now i am fine with it. I control it fully using my flight stick. Whilst it may need a bit of dabbling to get it just right, and FD could certainly work on improving it, to say it is impossible is not true.

Ignore the mouse except for the information panels on the left.

Map joystick, pedals hats etc to the functions and as said previously use the joystick to control the blue circle selector instead of the mouse.

You will get used to it. Exploration in DK2 is awesome.

personally I use voice attack to lock onto stars and type names of various Nebulae, and I use my HOTAS to 'fly' through the galaxy map. Give it some time and read the helpful advice on the forum. A few people have made youtube vids on how to setup your controls to work perfectly with the OR.

Now I find it much more intuitive then back with my old trackIR/mouse click setup. That's for exploring, as far as trading goes, voice attack automates the entire thing, I never push a single button.

My first impression with OR and the Galaxy Map was the same as the OP's.

But then I learned how to use it with my X52 Pro HOTAS instead of the useless mouse. The thread Spork has linked helped a lot.
Now it's fine. Just typing is still a pain with the Rift.

After setting up nicer mapping for x52 and adding the NATO spelling alphabet to VoiceAttack galaxy map is fine with Rift.

Re. VoiceAttack. I a have "Ship, text" command that shifts it to a profile with the spelling alphabet, and from which "Ship, done" returns it to my normal profile. In addition to the standard spelling alphabet the spelling profile has "Delete, Enter, Dash, Plus, Space, Stop, Comma" as commands, and in order to speed up using it some common letter-pairs and triplets have commands so I don't have to pause between each letter. "Lima, Hotel, Sierra"...

You can give my profile a try if you want. Typing is done either though the phonetic alphabet or just saying the letter. 'Type A' 'Alpha' it also includes a large amount of the popular systems, just say 'Lave station' 'Sol' 'Anarchy system' It will type and then lock onto system giving you details about the trade routes

For chatting just say 'open comms' then 'type Hello' etc etc

roughly 3000 commands optimized for DK2 use

Thank you, maybe I'll try that once. For now I don't even have a headset with microphone.
