Explosions in space

So far the elite designers have done everything in their power to make space-battle as close to reality as possible. I noticed however that explosions are red-cloudy looking like explosions are looking in earth gravity.

In space however, fire does not burn red and cloudy at all, because of the lack of gravity it makes perfect spheres and burns much quicker then it does in a gravity well with gas around. So realisticy any explosion will be a fast flash and the color would depend largly on what is burning. For exploding ships that would depend on the fuel used or what part of the ship is burning

Most light alloys (allumium, titanium) would burn a bright silver.

So should we have cloudy looking earth explosions in our spacegame?:S

Fun trumps real. I want the huge explosions. It is a satisfying and fitting end to a worthy competitor.

Just look at this video.. after 6:40 minutes of battle the enemy is finaly destroyed and i find the effect a bit underwhelming.. i big bright flash of ultraviolet would be much better, and more realistic.

I agree. I think a big, sudden flash would be more impressive than a hollywood ball of flames.

Same concept applies to the thrusters. Shouldn't leave a trail in a vacuum.

It's all just cosmetic however. It'd be nice if there was an option to adjust these things for those of us who want the hardcore experience.

The thrusters should leave some kind of trail because in the end they are "burning" fuel. Now, the main gripe if you go for realism would be about what they are burning actually.

And the explosions looked a bit small to me in the video i saw. Need bigger ones :D

I'm not sure why this is such a big thing. There's lots of embellishments and very unrealistic things about Elite. It has a realistic slant but not everything has to be 100% realistic, it wouldn't be fun or enjoyable.

Ignoring that fighter craft in space don't make the least bit of practical sense to begin with, and then focusing on a minor aesthetic issues like this seems to me very confused.

Yea but if you think about it they're firing in a vacuum so they shouldn't leave puffy contrails that slowly dissipate. The thruster is ejecting all the particles in such a way that it'd look more like a flashlight shining through a fog.

Here's a pic of a chemical thruster firing in a vacuum:
