Do you need to carry a basic discovery scanner if you install an advanced discovery scanner?
And is it worth stacking the field maintenance units or can noly 1 be used?
many thx

No. You don't need a BDS as well - ADS does the job, but better.

AFMU - you can carry more than one. Whether it's worth it depends how far you are going. On a long trip hull and canopy damage will be your limiter because they can't be repaired by the AFMU.

you need one of these:

basic discovery scanner - range 500ls
intermediate d.s. - range 1000 ls
advanced d.s. - range infinite

take the best you can afford... (i recommend advanced)

get a detailed surface scanner too to increase income

What ship are you using? I don't carry maintenance units in my Asp, am still over 80% for everything (hull at 95%, but that can't be repaired anyway). I don't carry heatsinks either (which many other explorers do).

As I've seen the AFMU can't repair itself - is it possible with two AFMUs to repair each other?
Oh and the power core can't seem to be repaired either since it would have to be turned off, which would be kind of counter productive. :D

Can an AFMU be repaired with Reboot/Repair?

The only REAL use of AFMU is to keep your FSD and Thrusters in tip-top condition. If either of them fritz, you will crash out of FS and get even more damage. The other components are either unfixable, or if they fritz, you just try again. Not saying you should never fix the others, if they are really low and causing you grief, then go for it, but I dont bother until I am on the way home.
I dont have a Heat Sink right now, but I would have one if I had remembered. It isnt disasterous to not have one unless you are horrendously unlucky. With 5000 systems visited, I have never hit a mythical "Close Binary", I have come in to "Fuel Scooping" which was a bit scarey, but never taken any damage. Currently on the far rim, 56kly away, 98% hull : due to answering forum threads while in Jump Space !

What does "infinite" means for the advanced DS? Is it system wide?

Sorry to hijack the thread but could I ask if I have an ADS in an unexplored system. Would it detect the presence of unknown stations or would they just still show up as unexplored targets till I scanned them close up ? I have got low on fuel before now trading, whilst passing through large areas of unexplored systems. I got really lucky and found one at the last minute last time but it was a close thing. It would be nice if I could jump to an unknown and scan for stations at my arrival point rather than running around the system on the off chance. I dont always have the capacity to carry a scoop due to cargo.

As far as I know you always see stations/outposts in a system regardless if you see anything else. But I don't know if that's always the case.

Top tip: Don't try and repair your FSD whilst going along in supercruise. There will be a loud bang, followed by a loud cracking noise, as your ship spins violently into oblivion. It's scarey stuff. Not that I've tried that of course :/

I did my first long trip with 4 heat sink launchers. However, after seeing what was out there, and learning to be careful, I decided this was overkill, and now only carry 1 for emergencies. I still recommend starting with multiple ones for new explorers as a safety measure.

Not really sure I see the need for 2 AMFU, unless you are taking tiny ones and might run out of ammo. It is highly unlikely that it is worth using one to repair the other. By time your AFMU is down to 0%, so will your PP, game over.
OTOH, if you have a spare slot, and dont want to bother with the Phantom Cargo slider for fuel efficiency, then why not, it weighs 0.

Same with thrusters. So I have heard of course, not me, no, not me.

SO you can stack heatsinks?

Yes, so you have more heat sink ammo (1 launcher carries 3 shots). Which is sort of silly, if you think about it. They should let you carry spare ammo in cargo tanks.

Heat sink recommended, though the better you get the less you will use them. I used to fly with 4 but now only take 1 because of the weight.

AFMU is a no brainer, if you have the space and the money to buy it then do so - they add no weight and you never know when you'll need it. Agree it doesn't fix everything, but it's better to have it than not. If you take two then one AFMU can fix the other.

Get the biggest fuel scoop you can afford & fit. In an Asp this would be the A6, you will be scooping a lot so you may as well fit the best.
