Has anyone seen the subsystems of an Imperial Fighter? The F63 Condor has standard fittings that all currently flyable ships can grab, but the Empire Fighter is just a new design entirely. Pretty neat, eh?

maybe its a discrete subsystem... kinda like part of the ship itself

Maybe that's what the "Field Generators" are, some kind of shield/life support hybrid. Maybe the shield is capable of generating an atmosphere around the ship, possibly as some kind of product of the way the shield generates power, meaning the pilot can draw from that. A bit of sciencesciencescience could be done here.

Or like the TIE-Fighters in Star Wars, which don't have any built-in life support, and the pilot is required to wear a space suit with sufficient life support.
