Extended Hyper space travel?

In my journeys it's been necessary to make several "stops" in order to travel the maximum distance my ship is capable of. While it's ok(ish) it sure would be nice if we could plot a course, within our ships maximum travel/fuel range, and enter "extended hyper space travel", which would get us to our destination without the need to stop/jump a lot of times to get there.

I'd imagine it being the same as hyper space is now with the duration being multiplied by the number of "skipped" dropout systems. Also, it would be great if we could access our ships internal functions while traveling in "extended mode" so we could plot our next moves in the galaxy map, adjust fire-groups or what ever.

I'm not suggesting an autopilot, just an extended, longer duration hyper space, that skips all the start/stop system bumps that is required to travel any significant distances relative to the galaxy, which while similar to an autopilot, I think it's different. Since the beginning I've wanted the ability to enter a long hyperspace sequence and still be able to access my ships internal workings. This, IMO, would certainly make it feel like traveling long distances and some "personal" time with my ship. Kinda like when the millennium falcon enters hyper space and the crew can relax for a bit and wander to the back of the ship for a spot of space chess :D

You ship's drive is less efficient the further you jump in one go so you wouldn't make it. Also this would remove one of the reasons to upgrade your FSD (some can use more fuel in one jump and therefore jump further).
