I have no hope this will ever be implemented but some food for thought:
Add external, fixed modules and abilities to ships. For example, the Type-10 could have mounted 16 torpedos on its exterior that you can not remove. The Gunship could have 4 additional multicannons, gunship specific, or how about the ASP Explorer having improved sensors that display all available contacts in a system regardless of the 1k ls vision range mark.
None of them can be engineered but come with special effects similar to the experimental weaponary and modules.
Alternatively, make them engineerable and offer more different loadouts similar to the fighter choices we have.
That's already everything. But again, no hope it will get even considered lol
