Extreme differences in ship prices

Evening all,

I was wondering if anyone knows why there are some pretty extreme differences in the prices of the current ships available to buy.

Sidewinder, Viper and Cobra are all relatively cheap and easy to buy.

After the the first three the prices suddenly jump to over 30mil+ - does anyone know why?

EDIT:

Oh and I'm referring to combat ships, so Orca, Dropship, Python, Cutter and Anaconda.

It might be because ships that haven't been released yet might close the gap?

It might be because you can start to earn around 500,000cr profit in a short amount of time quite easily in a Type 7.

It might be because the really big ships are really expensive to buy :)

(sorry, can't be more helpful than that)

The Type 6 is 1 million, the Asp is 6.5 million and some others are below 30 million, but yes, there is a sharp rise when it comes to ship prices,

1) It's intentional, you can earn money faster with bigger ships in many cases
2) Other ships when released will fill in some of the gaps

I would call it progressive. Keep in mind not all ship are implemented yet, and there are some pretty obvious gaps. The ASP for example is the only one to fill the gap between a million credit ship, and a 17 million credit ship. I think here will be more to chose from in the future.

But to answer the question, since the climb in features and performance is pretty progressive higher up the tree, the costs climb at a similar rate.

Size classes, basically. The viper and cobra are the top-of-the-line in the smallest class of ships (and are both very effective ways to make a living in space), and the next steps up are such an increase in size to the point that they require a larger landing pad. You're also not seeing the full list of ships - the Asp is the next major step up from the Cobra and it is something like 6 or 8 million, and there's a trading transport at 1mil.

The real prohibitive cost of those larger ships isn't even their buying price, though - it's their operating costs. Some of the larger ships have such costly repairs (and refueling) that its entirely possible to lose money on fairly routine and successful combat runs if the payoff isn't large enough. I believe the devs are looking into rebalancing that, fortunately, so that it's viable to make money in large-class ships without just trading.
