extreme slow download

hi i try to install Elite Dangerous: Odyssey but the download is extremely slow. Sometimes just 0.10mb/s. I am not on wifi but on ethernet. 300MB/s download ISP. My cpu is Ryzen5 and i have an ssd.

anyone has a an idea?

Depends on where you are and how your ( overall, for the whole route) network configuration looks like. And of course where you download from.
For one thing, AWS US East was reported to be dead last night (might be about the time you wrote this post).

i dont know how my ISP is routing until my home router. But i am not in the US so i think thats the problem. How can i pick a server in the launcher? i did look for mirrors but couldnt select one. I didnt know i was connecting to US actually. What about the game itself? Will i connect to a closer server?

This is an old video but it explains how the system works for Elite - basically, when playing the game you just periodically update from the servers for "instance" information for example, your playing is not carried out "on a server" but in a peer-to-peer network (even in Solo). The video explains it:

Actual downloading of the game on installation and upgrading is different and can seem to take forever to start and then suddenly it will romp home at your full ISP capability - which AWS server you get connected to for those downloads I assume is what determines that. (Steam-based players seem to have more reliably fast downloads but that is just my observation, don't know if it is true.)

Thank you! nice video! in time i will watch it fully but right now i forwarded it a bit. Funny at 44:36 he says 'it gives a really consistent download experience':giggle: for me a whooping 0.10mb/s

i think you are right about speeding up somewhere. I went out and somehow the download went from 6 days ETA to complete in 6 hours.

I did try to download on Steam and i did get full 36MB/s speed but that was just a short moment of fun because after that the launcher forced me to download Odyssey again at 0.10MB/s. I guess Steam only installs the base game.

Also note that major updates are being rolled out today so of course you have the whole download fun to experience again. (I am "upgrading" at the moment - the Horizons one was fast.).

I won't mention the inevitable patches to be downloaded in the coming days too. ;)

Good luck

oh no! you are right. I just open the launcher and clicked the Upgrade button. Now i am stalling on 'preparing for update'. Oh well my luck over you is that am not addicted yet XD

Don't blame me, I'm already in game.

Happy to report that both downloads were pretty fast, Horizons obviously smaller download but the Oddity one was not too bad.

P.S. I Just started Steam (which has a separate Elite Dangerous account) and that downloaded the update like lightning, I mean super fast.

Oddity reminds me of a David Bowie song.

Your download's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do
