Extreme3d Pro joystick profile

Hi,

I purchased the game and a joystick yesterday and tried a couple training missions. It has been such a long time since I used a joystick I found I was having problems getting started. I was hoping someone with a Logitech Extreme3d Pro might share their setup/profile with me.

Cheers,
Rhek

Hi.

I map thrusters to the hat switch; targetting stuff on the four top buttons; I ignore the throttle and other buttons. Seems to work well enough

I bought one of those and just couldn't use the thing. Always felt slow and cumbersome, especially that terrible throttle lever. It gathers dust while I use the old kb/m.

I've used this joystick for years. Eventually you will have to buy another as they do not last forever. Joystick use in games, regardless of their type is always a give and take. Yes, they give you more immersion in the game play but they also tend to offer downsides vs the less immersive keyboard / mouse setup that these games have to support by default. I use my hat for straffe (up, down, left ,right) I use the twist of the stick to roll. I use the x and y movement of the stick to handle yaw and pitch. There is a throttle on the joystick and i use it for that purpose. The buttons (and there are plenty) are mapped up to preference. I tend to not use the generally accepted "secondary fire" button as a secondary fire button because my thumb is controlling straffe and I prefer my secondary fire to not require me to lift off of the straffe button to activate it. Every button on the top of the joystick is an important combat button if you use the hat for straffe so keep that in mind when mapping keys to your joystick (you have 4 outside of the hat that you can press without leaving the hat).

Even though in some games of this genre (and maybe this one) it may be easier to do certain things without a joystick, I still find it more fullfilling to use one. I dont play the game to win, i play the game to have fun.

Here's mine:

Trigger: Primary Fire
Thumb: Secondary Fire
Hat Switch: Divert Power
Top of joystick buttons (forgot button numbers):
North West: Use Chaff Launcher
North East: Use Shield Cell
South West: Cycle Next Ship (or whichever targeting bind you like)
South East: Cycle Previous Subsystem (faster to get to Power Plant/FSD)
Throttle: Forward Only
Base button (forgot number):
South West: Throttle Reverse (Toggle)
South East: Set Speed to 0%

The rest I do not use, in fact the 2 base buttons I almost never use. The way I fly is that I use throttle to set speed out of combat, but come combat I set it on the blue area and use thrusters to change my speed & help me turn/drift instead (which is bound to the "wsadef" keys). That way when I do not use thrusters, I'm always at my optimal pitch speed.

I was struggling with my 3DPro until I set some small dead zones to stop it drifting all over the place, and the last 2 weeks or so have been great. I've no idea what the numbers are for the buttons, but this is how it's set up at the moment...

Trigger & Thumb - Fire Primary/Secondary
Hat - Power Distribution (changes to Fwd/Rev/Left/Right thrust when landing gear is deployed)
Top left - Speed to 0
Top Right - Speed to 75% (I hit this when 7-8s from a supercruise target and never overshoot it)
Lower left - Target ahead
Lower right - Engage FSD

The base buttons change depending what I'm doing in the game, but I generally use the keyboard for everything else.

(Edit: As of this morning I've also dug out an ancient Sidewinder Precision 2 joystick, and have put it on the kitchen table next to a laptop... now there's a challenging control device to use when docking!)
