I'm Commander in Fed, but decided to get around to ranking up in Empire. Last night I had 2 genuine (non-bugged) advancements consecutively, and tonight I've had 3 in a row. Amazing - I'll be a Baron in 5 minutes, just got to deliver some algae. Is this some strange new bug? (not that I'm complaining!)

Pure luck, that said you might have to wait an awful long time for your next mission!
Hopefully in the future ranking up involves more... story. I feel like you'd almost have to be a socialite to some extent to climb the ranks of Imperial feudalistic society. I'd attend a ball on Capitol to become a Count.
It'd be interesting to have some interaction with NPCs that didn't involve murdering them, even if it's a bit railroaded. I guess we'll have to wait for on-foot gameplay before anything like that is even remotely possible.

Odds are you've done missions for an empire faction in the past and never did/noticed the advancement opportunities. It's happened to me when I would stack up 10+ missions, and when I complete them I was offered back to back advancement from the same outpost.

lol, that's where all my advancement missions went... You got them. 
Absolutely agree, delivering 2 x grain for one rank, then 3 x algae for the next wasn't exactly heroic. There was a kill pirate mission that required USSs, and there were some heavy wings of pirates in them - that was quite exciting. BTW, the USSs also seemed to be offering up more - I didn't get any mission branches, funeral ships & the like. First one a miss, 2nd and third had my targets. Chuffed.
Yeah, prob right. Maybe I just had a very big store of Imperial rep from the past, and the RNG has coughed it all up at once. Not an issue if there's no more, I just wanted to make Baron to try the Imperial Clipclop, so mission accomplished.

The imp and fed ranking system is totally meaningless.
FD really missed the boat here.
I would not mind if they got reset and tied in with a proper, deep and interesting military mission system.

Pre-designed "story" missions would be acceptable and honestly welcome over what we've got now. The only problem is that only one rank matters in each faction. There'd have to be some additional perks for ranking up.

). I've been waiting 3 weeks and still no ranking mission to Baron. FD are frelling morons, the longer I play this game the more I come across stupid elements which drive me away from ED.

I think there must have been a lot of rep stored up, as I had a shot at this a few weeks ago with little luck. I know it's old advice, but I constantly moved systems and tried to gain favour with new Imperial factions each time. I was also careful when hunting never to hit anyone who was even remotely connected with the Imperial system. I only did the quick and easy missions - fetch this, carry that, and also anything that looked official.

I've been stuck at Knight for what seems like an age now.
I don't even get the Empire rep up arrow anymore when I raise Imperial minor factions. I get offered the good missions everywhere I go... but no naval progression mission offers.
