Newcomer / Intro Eye strain issue

The constant shaking twitching and lurching of the screen during sc and impulse flight is making me want to gouge my eyes out to relief the eye strain.

Is there an option somewhere to switch it off ?

If not is there somewhere I can go to request a "reduce camera shake option"

I'm honestly baffled and why your screen would be shaking, twitching and lurching at all? What hardware are you using to control the game and what are your hands doing while this is going on?

You must be blessed with dull senses.

The engines of the ship cause it to shake constantly from the moment you take off to the moment you land !
I think its meant to be haptic screen feedback or something.

I'm not convinced movement can cause eye-strain, after all I've never heard of anyone suffering from eye-strain from their head moving while walking.

Yes, bind a key to your eyelids. :p

Persevere, you will get used to it and not notice it after a while.

I have noted one of the ships shake quite allot more. . Or seem to. I believe it was the T6 though i can't be sure of my memory. Each ship has slightly different handling characteristics.

I recommend visiting your local optician and having your eyes checked. You may need glasses or require a new prescription on your lenses.

Hi well I suffer from eyestrain due to overactive brain, dyslexia and migraines.
Denying someones symptoms is quite unhelpful to be frank.

So to help I don't actually have a problem with the game at all but I did have trouble to start with.
as allready said you do get used to it, and its worse on smaller ships.
But I found the following helpful:
change your field of view settings in combination with different resolutions.
Dropping settings as required.

personally I play Max resolution with a reduced field of view in civilised space (if I'm exploring I find I can up the field of view) and to help that I reduce effects ie no shadows.

But this depends a lot on your hardware. There will be field of view and resolution settings that are better for you. I am happy with the game but I did find the screen moving off putting and the above did reduce it to an acceptable level for me. But it didnt remove it.

<---dyslexic as well. As for the eyestrain bit. I use a 24in LCD HDTV as a monitor, and I don't play in a dark room. Seriously. Backlighting helps so much with eyestrain it's not even funny. As for the the screenshake on SC entry and exit, I just look away. until reentry to normal space is complete

That made me laugh. I also have this issue after about an hour of playing. I went and bought a small reading lamp and bought a 4300k LED bulb for it. Stuck it behind the monitor facing the wall. It does help some with the strain as the back of the wall is now brighter then the monitor. During hours of outdoor light, I use a POS pair of oversized reading glasses. Changing the FOV as others have stated also helped greatly! Hope this helps.

Eye strain/headaches is quite common in video games, especially when played for long periods. Mainly caused by eyes trying to focus on certain objects on the screen that are rapidly moving around. The eyes automatically try to track all these movements, and after a while begin to ache, leading to migranes or headaches in some people. Trick is to relax the eyes & not look at it :)

That's nothing. I lost my shoe near tanaka terminal. It's floating in space somewhere. And I'll never see that shoe again. :(

I love my shoe !

It can happen with visual movement that is separate from what you are physically experiencing or controlling. An extreme example might be wearing an OR that is connected to another wearer's inputs, I imagine that could cause dizziness rather quickly. I'd hope that as the brain becomes accustomed to the pilot actions that cause this visual feedback in ED, it might learn to "own" the feedback and become less bothered by it.

I remember when I first played Elite Dangerous the motions made me motion sick during intense combat. Fortunately my eyes and brain adapted so I could play this wonderful game.

As for the shaking of the ships while in normal space, especially when you hit the booster, I think some shaking is just inevitable.

But for the shaking caused by low-end PC/settings too high, I found these setting make the most difference for me (especially in SC):

- Turn down or turn off shadows
- Turn down or turn off FX Quality
- Turn down resolution
- Turn down or turn off Anti-aliasing

All the options effect performance in some way, but the four options listed above made the most noticeable changes for me.

I hope you're able to get things straightened out so you can enjoy this awesome game. I dunno why some folks think eye strain is made up... but best luck to you Killerhurtz (love the name btw, had to give you rep for that :D ).

My experience with eye strain, is that few people know how to relax and let their eyes wander on the screen, so many games now a days teach us to focus on one specific thing, and a lot of people are practically blind to what is happening on the whole screen at any one time, and when that is the case, then all the small details in games such as Elite will cause eyestrain if nothing else because you are not relaxed in your eyes, your gaze is flickering and trying to focus in on specific things rather then letting them wander and take in everything.

At least this is my experience, try to learn just to let your eyes wander don't focus on any one thing, has helped a few people I know that have gotten eye strain from some games, though naturally can't guarantee it will work for you.

Research suggests otherwise

If playing a game is causing eyestrain, it suggests that there are other issues at play, primarily ergonomic but possibly also related to preexisting eyesight issues or undiagnosed eyesight issues.

The top relevant result on that Google search is this thread.

Note that I'm not saying it's not a problem; I'm suggesting that the movement causing eyestrain is indicative of another issue.
