Newcomer / Intro Eyeing Up A Cutter

Is it a good idea for me to get a cutter now?

I think I want the extra cargo and more collectors and prospectors if possible. But am I better sticking with my trusty Python at 198T for now? I have to go and rank up imperial to get one but at least I have the money to get one and fit it out properly. What is the downside to a cutter? Is it just ship-envy and the Python is best for me, if so why?

Cutter is kind of expensive lady to own and fly. And Imperial ranking grind is not really funny at all if you try to grind for it instead of slow paced ranking. And all big ships are really really slow turning things. Cutter especially. Plus better engineer it out too....

Apart from that, well I like it, I don't have Federal rank for Corvette, but compared to Anaconda I like it more. And if you fly it right there are few situations from which you cannot at least escape with engineered Cutter.

You only want it for mining? Given the commodity prices (per ton) you are doing fine with the Python.

Don't underestimate the grind to get a Cutter. And you need about 300-500 milj to build a decent one. But let me take a guess.. You want a fleet carrier?

She expensive. She slow. She heavy. But she goddamn sexy. Ain't no other booty like'er in the whole wide galaxy.

Probably. But that shouldn't stop you. You have a whole lotta grindin' in front of you anyway so a lot of time to make your mind. ;)

My mining Cutter has 9 collectors; 1 prospector; 512 cargo; 4A refinery, shield and scoop - can deplete an asteroid with 3x mining lasers running continuously (without depleting WEP).

I enjoy the Python for mining - but the Cutta's betta (in terms of capacity and speed). ;)

Well, Clipper is about the half of the way up to the Cutter when comes to the imperial grind fest, so he can enjoy the second half in a Clipper.

Back on point, though - Python is a goody two-shoes of the Elite shipyards. She's nice and all, but she gets boring real quick.
So in my opinion, Cutter is a nice goal to have in mind and something to work towards.

But be aware that it means A LOT of missions and A LOT of time away from mining if you want one, Hawknerd.

Well it used to be de rigueur to get a Cutter for mining, but with the introduction of market forces to LTD prices where how much you have in your cargo hold effects the price you get sometimes a smaller ship is more profitable. Ie smaller load drops price less than pitching up with 512 tons of LTD. I am not an expert, but from guys that have done a lot of mining reckon the Python is more profitable at the moment.

No plan to get a carrier! Just want to max my earnings and skills with LTD laser mining. I can easily afford it.

Well, the one thing you're going to have to face is - getting a Cutter is a month or two of hard work. Who knows if mining will even be "a thing", two months from now?

So if you want Cutter just for that, you may end up disappointed.
But on the other hand, Cutter is good for other things as well, so yeah. Personal opinion - go for it. It will be eating you up if you don't, anyhow.

Why is it a month or two of hard work? Also I only lose 10% if I sell it so it is not a financial risk as such.

Going up imperial ranks means doing a lot of missions for imperial factions. First two or three ranks are a matter of a day of two, but the rest - well, even if you're stacking up a lot of easy missions, it's gonna take time.

Yeah, I have the same problem with the Conda. She's good for many things (maybe a bit too good, just like the Python) but without a glimpse of character. Boring.

My cutter is set up as you are suggesting, for mining.
She is fine for laser mining with plenty of cargo space. fewer trips to a selling station.
But deep core mining with the Cutter is a bit like this.
