FA-OFF aim with joystick impossible

Hi,

I am testing FA-OFF a little and it is utterly impossible to aim with the stick. It just swings back and forth super sensitive and always over compensating.

Is it like this for everyone?

It takes practice. FA OFF means that the slightest movement say left - will keep you moving left at that rate. If you turn more, then you will turn faster and faster.

So if you want to move left without FA, then you really only need to tap it. Then counter it when you want to stop turning.

Move the stick 10% left, to get back to normal, you'll need to move the stick 10% right.

Yeah, tried deadzone. But that is even worse.

According to me using fixed weapons on my Sidey, it is very hard to keep enemy in crosshair with FA-OFF compared to standard mode

Practice, and a descent HOTAS with rudder pedels helps. FA OFF is easier with the larger heavier ships. Also something to keep in my mind - No harm in toggling FA to stabilize the ship, I do it all the time, and keep your inputs to a minimum.

I'll give you a good real world comparison... I've seen 10000 hour Boeing guy's transition to the Airbus and waggle the stick all over the place, the less you do the better.. make a small input and small corrections until you are confident. What is happening to you sounds very much like 'Pilot induced oscillation's'

Oh yeah, did I also mention practice? :)

Isinona has a decent tutorial on youtube, but it takes a lot of practice. Even with gimballed weapons i struggle to hit anything with FA off.

I was thinking earlier I would use some control management script to toggle joystick sensitivity when I press the FA toggle button. Turns out I'm too lazy, and it would be nice to have the functionality in the client itself.

Hate to point it out, but it's you effectively over-compensating.

FA-Off means your ship stops firing thrusters to maintain your ship's heading and instead you're now flying with real Newtonian physics. That means when you push left on your stick, your ship will continue to spin left equal to the thrust you've given it, until equal force is applied in the opposite direction. If you then apply too much thrust to the right, it will spin to the right.

Basically you have can't just pull right to turn right. Instead, you push right briefly and let go.

To counter that and come to a stop you (very gently) push left and let go, and keep doing it until you've built enough thrust to stabilise - if you over do it, you then have to push quickly in the opposite direction.

As others have said it's certainly not impossible, but once you get it into your head that you don't just pull on the stick, and you have to be real gentle with the force you apply, it does get far easier.

Hi thanks for the info on Isinona series. However, it looks like it is much harder to keep ship in exact crosshair with FA.-OFF compared to On. Sure you get to turn some sharper bends, but exact aiming gets hurt instead.

no issue here keep practising no one should be flying with assist on (you will die lots) im using a xbox 360 pad so no excuse for you

Just be gentle with your stick and make small adjustments, and practice, practice, practice. I'm not good at it myself fwiw.

The real question is, does FA-OFF pay off in the end? If I am equally skilled in both setup, do I have an advantage to stay behind an Anaconda in FA-OFF?
