FA off help

OK....I am a decent combat pilot. However, I would like to get better.

I find that FA off is just frustrating to use. I understand the theory behind using it, I just can't seem to do it. Looking for any and all helpful tips.

It's very counter-intuitive feeling at first. I threw myself into the deep end of the pool about six weeks ago, ditching my HOTAS and adopting a keyboard & mouse and switching to FA Off 100% for all aspects of flying. Honestly, at first it was about as much fun as passing a kidney stone through an erection, but as you start to get the hang of it, it lends a massive feeling of competency and satisfaction that I never felt before. I'm nowhere near being "great" but being dedicated and sticking with it has got me reasonably tolerable with PvP, pretty dangerous with high ranked NPC's, and overall decent at landings and station manouvering. I won't lie though, it's a ton of work that appears pretty thankless for a long time. Once it clicks, though, it's a lot of fun.

Here is a link to a thread that I found very helpful: that got me started on my journey, complete with some awesome video tutorials that are broken down kind of like "Flying FA Off for Dummies"

CMDR Lancer's video tutorials were the most helpful for me: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtywH7XtIZ0OJd8EM8TKw-fTGGCWJCSoq It's a long playlist but recommended to watch entirely.

Start in a light, manoeuvrable ship. For me, the best ship for that was the Imperial Courier, your mileage may vary. Don't focus or even think about combat applications at first, if you plan to learn always FAoff. Practice docking at orbital outposts, not starports. Take off, dock again, this is good for precision control.

edit: about docking, it's simple at starports too but it's easier to learn when you don't have to worry about syncing to station's rotation. And don't listen to people telling which control method is best; in my experience the best is whatever you're comfortable with.

I don't like this part :)

I didn't either, at first. The video tutorials I linked to are pretty about explaining how to set up a HOTAS for FA Off, so there really isn't any need to go KB&M unless a player just wants to. I was looking for the extra challenge of learning a new system
