FA off viable with xbox controller?

Hi, before i go messing about re-configuring all my keys and finding a workable set up on the xbox controller. I wanted to ask if using the xbox controller with FA off is competitive as k+m or joystick be it in combat or otherwise?.

or is it a case of just dont bother with it?

I used it when i first bought elite and while usable in basic gameplay didnt stand up well in the pvp minigame, but i was using FA on then.

Adice appreciated, thx

Hi mate, Yes definitely. We have a couple of pilots in our group (Newtons Gambit - FA-off nutters) who use Xbox controllers. One even went back to it after trying to learn KB+M!!

Also don't listen to the whole 'KB+M or nothing' whiners out there, they just can't be bothered to learn how to become good pilots thats all. You can be a great pilot regardless of your control configuration.

Same as above. Dont forget when binding your controls that you can bind any combination like hold L bumper and press control pad up or x and b together. There is also a secondary overide set you can employ when you lower you landing gear. Mine uses like 30 distinct button combos. I still use a few on the KB for convenience.

IMO without relative mouse most KBM advocates would be pretty crap in any serious pvp encounter.
I both pc and xb1 accounts and use all three (kbm, pad and hotas) input methods regularly.
None are significantly better than the others in all facets of combat control, but do have intrinsic benefits and detractions.
The game pad, especially the Elite controller are perfectly competitive in 99% of encounters.
Custom key bindings are the key to unlocking the best utility as others have mentioned.

I use an Xbox controller. I use a footpedal to momentarily use flight assist off. I'm not a great combat pilot, but for comparison purposes about how easy is it to fly fa-off with a gamepad... I am able to dock my ship in a Coriolis station.

Glad to hear people sharing the love for the Xbox controller. I use it too. I bound the X button to FA on/off and I get on fine with it. There are only two significant issues - I still need to use Q and E for lateral thrusters (which I therefore don't use much in combat), and you could argue that aiming at small targets with FA off can be tricky if you cannot develop the skill to make small adjustments on the analogue sticks. These points might be resolved with the Elite Controller due to its extra paddles and customisable responsiveness but I don't know for sure as I don't own one
