I guess they don't want to set a precedent just yet. Just how are FD going to present the human from in game. Are they going for photo-realism or will they go for something more cartoony? Look at the faces in the X games for instance? Would we settle for that?

If they go down the realism route, how are our avatars going to be presented when we get the first person add-on. Will we be able to send in photos of ourselves so that our own faces are laid over the 3D models? Which would be really cool by the way.

On this subject I suspect they will play their cards close to their chest, at least for now. Personally I can't wait.

I found the aliens... :D

Sorry!

Not only how to represent them, but how to garantee a broad enough vayriety?

"What? I just shot you in this Eagle! You were a criminal! How dare you to come back and scan me in this authority vessel?"
Faces are very recognizable for humans. We are evolved for it. Now imagine, how it would feel to meet the same 10(?), 20(?) persons over and over again in the galaxy? How many different portraits would be needed to avoid this irksome déjà vu? Quite a few, I guess.

Maybe, if procedural face generation would be possible. But I have no idea, how good (realistic) the results can be nowadays - or if it is possible at all to create believable faces using this method.

This ^^^ is probably the reason FDev are holding back FP until they've worked on it...

just a few faces (or robotic even better) of NPC Orbital station personnel ll do fine

I'd guess that once they start working on walking around ships/stations then characters are going to need heads (because at the moment your pilot is faceless) and those systems they create will also double up as work towards giving the galaxy more personality like having player avatars in the comms panel/mission screens.

They could get one of the artists to spend ages creating avatars for NPCs now but this would ultimately be wasted time as all the work would just be replaced by the walking-around-character-model faces later down the line. So it makes more sense to have that artist work on things that will stay in the game and be of use now rather than work on elements that are scheduled to be fleshed out properly later down the line.

Walks up to desk, looks over shoulder at ship, then turns back to the dock worker with a frown. "Didn't I just talk with you six light years away in Aulin?"

Oh the agony.
This.
I prefer my imagination when it comes to stuff that simply cannot be implemented in a non-agonising way why not just imagine?

We're never going to be walking anywhere.
By 3300 we'll all have been floating around in zero gravity in our ships for so long, our muscles will have wasted away to nothing.
I'm not too keen to see the human representation personally, it will be an ugly affair ;)

Actually... Someone mentioned that if you looked down you kinda lot, well, sorta pregnant... Either than or they sell an awful lot of beer in these stations.

I think it would look like your average fashion show, with the size 00 cat walk models strutting their stuff. Imagine them in space suits and you are pretty close. ;)

In fact, the conspiracy theorists images of the 'greys' might just about fit us in 3300.
Long spindly arms and legs, large bulging eyes from looking at all that cockpit and sky in the gloom...

Maybe the 'aliens' are just us from the Elite future....???
