Faction Rank Question

To get faction rank - do I need to do missions for the main factions (Empire / Federation etc.) or is it any use doing missions for local factions allied to the main faction?

Doing missions for any local group that are allied with a major faction will increase your reputation with both.

So I just keep on doing combat missions and eventually I'll be offered an advancement mission?

Yes. Just keep doing whatever missions you can for the faction allied to your wanted major faction and you should receive an advancement mission eventually.
