If you've owing allegiance to the Empire or the Federation or the Alliance, or if you are an independent, and if Thargoïd attack one of the two rival factions (or both), what will you do ?

Regardless of the affiliation of those attacked, I'll be siding with them as it would be humans vs thargoid and I don't really want to become a tasty treat for a tharglet.

I suppose it would depend on the reason for the war. If the other faction antagonized the Thargoids it would be their own fault, and if the Thargoids left everyone else alone I'd leave them to it. If the Thargoids are the clear aggressors then my own faction would likely be a future target, so helping sooner would be preferable to waiting for them to attack.

I don't think the Thargoids, if successful in defeating the human race in a rather emphatic way, would have our personal sensitivities into consideration.

In the event of a global human - Thargoid war, there wouldn't be much option than to fight against the Thargoids, even if a not very committed way (e.g. cargo scooping to stop any Thargoid to pick up the spoils, all in the good of mankind, of course ;)). But if they let us be, I do not see any reason to go after then - after all, alien items are not that valuable ...:D

It really would depend on the circumstances for me. In principal, human politics come after such a universal threat but, if there was an advantage to be gained, then I might not immediately ally myself to the other human.
I know this sounds a bit nasty but it's dog eat dog out there or, very possibly, thargoid eat dog.
Hanging around on the outskirts of a battle and waiting to scoop cargo or finish off damaged ships is an absolutely despicable way of making money and is the lowest form of space piloting; worse even than a rampant pirate.
It sounds like great fun! :D

I've also heard that Thargoid tastes a bit like chicken. Harvesting them for Sunday lunch would mean every family member gets a thigh.

While it will be great to have a fight with a Thargoid ship I would like to see a scenario at some point in the game where they have to come to you for help in defeating an enemy that they have been unable to defeat. Kind of like what happened in Star Trek Voyager when the Borg who were (and still are I suppose) enemies of the Federation but they had to turn to them for help in defeating Species 8472. Sorry if anyone reading this doesn't watch Star Trek and hasn't got a clue what I am talking about but I am sure there will be lots of you guys that know what I am on about.

Call me a reactionary old speciesist if you like, but if Thargoids are attacking humans, it goes beyond mere factional politics. If the Thargoids do appear to be playing politics, it's a mere ruse for the old maxim of divide and conquer

At the end, the 'Genius' ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genius_(mythology) ) of Humanity as a species, is the most powerful motivator. The biggest anti-imperial, but ethically upright, looking up with his eyes an eventual slaughter of human civilians in a planet of the Augustus attacked by Thargoids.. I can hardly see him resist the urge to vaporize the vicious oozy insectoids 'other than himself'.

Given my experience with space sims that have 3 main factions I am going to go out on a limb that, should the Thargoid turn up, two of these will form an alliance while the third joins the Thargoid! :)
