Factions and their Identity to you

With Powerplay, it seems it will be more important who you choose to side with in the battle for power. Each will have an in-game identity to help us choose (much of which we don't know yet).

So I was wondering, how do others see the factions (Major or Minor) in Elite Universe? Are there any other real life (or fantasy/fictional) powers/civilisations that you equate with an in-game faction (past or present)? Is there any emotion or feelingl that a faction gives off to you in your Elite story?

Eg.

Empire - Roman Empire / Power / Dominate
Federation - American / Freedom / Corrupt
Alliance - Commonweath or perhaps EU / Democratic

I see the Empire is more like Victorian Imperial Austria/Germany to me. Pragmatic and brutal, bound by an archaic and outmoded code of honour and tradition.

And despite all the Empires pomp and power. They are bogged down in trivial affairs and court intrigues, battles of personalities and internal power plays. This weakens the Empire from within, makes it vulnerable to external threats.

I'll be signing up with the Senator Torval, the slave queen. The dagger in the dark.

Actually reminds me a bit like Klingons for the Empire as well after reading your thoughts. :)
 
If we go by the Imperial Roman imagery, -and we must remember that many Empires take a close look at this one-, we have just encountered the same problems of being dependent on a strong unifying figure, and it is only in times of no clear transition, that vulnerability strikes. I blame our version of the "Pax Romana", it makes us soft and leaves too much time for internal dispute. It must be said though, the enemy you know, is better than the friend you don't trust at all. This Empire leaves room for some very decent local autonomy, as long as the loyalty is not in question. It seems that loyalty no longer lasts until death, something that means that tradition is not enough in all cases, a transitory period must be covered by more than trust in your Emperor, in the final analysis! Because people can't be trusted by nature, there just need to be a system making sure they stay in line. Like a temporary central command structure, with the power to shut down this madness. But who takes the command of those in command. The top of the pyramid is a most delicate spot, for there everything comes together!

I am afraid that as an ultra-traditionalist, the only conclusion must be that the House Duval must prevail. As in Arissa Lavigny-Duval. So let the games begin! It is time to close this window of opportunity, for it is turning into quite the panorama view. And you know how it goes, what worked in the past, will work for the future. This might be seen as archaic, but if we consider that all systems eventually will face their own trials, we might as well stick to one, and stop experimenting with the fate of humanity! It is just a matter of proper education. They can't learn if they are dead though. So pass the notes, just as a precaution!

Oh, and may the most worthy successor win!
