Factions: Focusing on the Small...

I was just reading a thread about how with so many factions in the game they remain unimportant. With 20,000 inhabited systems, each with several factions, that's a lot of factions.

The secret for those who want that emotional connection is simply to focus on a small region of the galaxy. The story of that faction and it's neighbouring starsystems is beautiful, complex and meaningful in its own right. Sure if you look at the whole it can seem unimportant. But for me, Cubeo and the story of the interplay between my own Prismatic Imperium, Patrons Principles, Purple Deeds and the others is in and off itself an epic story that involves many players and our battle for control of a key trading station that's been going on for months.

Civil wars have been fought, plans have been hatched and the battle for Adelman Station was one of the most epic and satisfying moments of my ED career. Because to me Adelman was important and capturing it was a key moment in increasing beyond our 'starter station'.

The story of Cubeo involves hundreds of players, pvp battles, combat patrols, exploration missions and the Prismatic Imperium decides the fate of 10 BILLION people, (4 billion of whom follow the PI).

Yes, it's small in the face of the galaxy, but focusing on it, getting to know the factions involved (even if they are NPC) and our battles to keep our system safe have been epic.

So it's possible, focusing on the small, you can have a story within a story within a story that is fulfilling in its own right.

The above is so true...

Those that have not yet joined a player faction, and enjoyed it's rise and battles, have not seen so much of what is good about ED.

I think many of those who call for guilds and clans, have not been involved with this aspect of the game. If they had, they would know they are unnecessary.

Looking forward to the faction improvements that are planned, too.

I think an all out war with cap ships decimating systems, a true cataclysmic conflict that reduces the bubble by half and forces commanders to spend their billions in the war effort would get me interested

I agree completely. Once I got over the initial hump of the early game, acquired some assets and my first elite rank, I joined a player owned minor faction. I never have "nothing to do". Exactly the opposite, as a matter of fact. There is always more things to do than I can poke a stick at. And I'm thoroughly enjoying every single minute of it.

Fighting the civil war for Adelman Station was honestly the first transcendant moment of the game for me, fighting Purple Deeds NPCs was more than just getting the combat bonds. I /cared/ about the battle. Of course, we're always working to get control of Medupe.
