Newcomer / Intro Factions - important? any difference?

Hi there,

is there any difference in the factions? Does it matter which faction I "follow" first?

Empire is quite off, are there harder missions more stuff? More easy to be the bad guy?

What is with Alliance? I have seen, there is no rank available - why?

Do I "belong" to a faction after taking some missions?


I would be glad to get some input on that topic...

I don't think there's a difference other than where the story might take them. In terms of technology, the ships, the stations, and mission types, they are all the same.

EDIT: Of course, different ship designs belong to different factions/companies but that's just lore. In terms of mechanics and limitations for the player, there's no difference. You can do exactly the same.

Well, there's a backstory that develops as the developers write it (I guess mainly published through the newsletter and in-game news events). This includes wars and stuff like that. Nothing that affects you directly. You can ignore it.

It's really about who you want your character to be. That said unfortunately right now the Federation and the Empire are the only two viable factions if you want a complete "military" career experience as the Alliance's content is still yet to be made (which I really hope that gets done because that's the faction I back). In the last Elite game which was set in 3250 the Alliance had recently set itself apart from the other two factions so historically it's only about 80 years old or so versus the centuries old Federation and Empire. Without going too much into the story they were also responsible for attempting to negotiate with the only known alien race in the Elite universe which is how the game ended. Not sure if they'll pick that back up or what.
