Failed Illegal Mission (was blown up) > Abandoned Mission on Restart (because was blown up) > FINED???

Not sure if this is a bug, or planned. I took a mission to smuggle slaves (the one time I partake in the slave trade!) and was blown up en route to the destination. Bummer, but karma. I revived and the mission was still in my log but the inventory was gone, so I abandoned it. DING! Massive fine! Now I got to deal with that (karma x2 -___-)

Is this supposed to happen? Seems like rubbing a lemon in a wound after having been blown up, failed the mission, and having to pay insurance, and now either ponying up the massive fine or taking the bounty and living life on the run :p

Yeah, many missions include a penalty for failure. Look for a line marked "Fine" in the mission description, that's how much failing will run you.

You accepted a contract, failed it, and had a consequence. I like it, but I'm a stealth player who loves "ghosting*."

*= The playstyle of a masochist. :p

This means that you could still have passed the mission as the inventory was not mission specific - so if you found someplace else that sold the goods you were carrying for the mission, you could have bought them that way and taken them to the mission destination and you still would have passed the mission.

If the inventory is mission specific, it will say so in the mission description. Also, it will tell you in the mission description if you have failed it.

You got fined for abandoning the mission.

This right here.

I had a great one - one of those ones where you hold the cargi for a while then meet a contact. I got to tge system on time, the contact wouldn't show. In and out of SC a couple of times to trigger him, no dice. With minutes to go I jump out of system and back, which finally spawns the contact. I then get interdicted 3 times trying to rendezvous, timer runs out, mission failed. Then a Master Vulture and yet another pirate jump me while I'm fuming in realspace. Escaped with 3% hull, a cracked canopy and a hold full of stolen slaves. I almost spaced them out of sheer spite.

That was because Death wasn't a fail condition for the mission as it is for some missions. In this case you could have simply bought some cargo from a station that matched the type the mission was asking you to transport and still have completed the mission. Unless the mission specifically states "Will fail on ship destruction" you keep the mission. Which is why abandoning it gave you a fine.
