Horizons "Failed to communicate with server" and Let's Go Lean, Gene!!

Okay, so I just got the failed to communicate thingie about 6 or 7 times in a row even though the client says everything is all tickety poo, along with the web page that has a server status box. So I figured it was time to exit stage Left, preferably not Right if you get my drift. No point in running missions if the server is feeling a little down, if you will.

So maybe it's time for the boys, the Frontier devs, to cut back on some things. First up, the Engineers stuff, ditch that. No one in their right mind plays that, right.?!? And at the very least, stop foisting those weird 4-unit cargo blocks on me, make it optional. There's only so many hours in a day, and I need time for my naps too.

And all the mining mission requests, just ditch Mining, period. It's lame and boring as all get out. I'd rather watch paint dry, not to mention the intense resource load on the servers. And ya, I know, it's all part of the history of the game and so on and so forth. But there's much bigger and better things coming down the pipe in the v2.2 update, it's time to cut our losses, to move on.

But overall I'm pretty content these daze, especially with some of the planet based missions that are actually fun, and worth doing now. I guess someone at HQ finally remembered that the whole Horizons thing was largely about planets. I wonder who had the brain fart on that one, or maybe they just laid off some of upper management.?!?

[h=2]"Failed to communicate with server"[/h]Oh how I love that. Witcher, Skyrim, all the stalker games, all the borderlands game run fine, while FD can't get its finger out. Cheapskates! Bloody cheapskates.

"Failed to communicate with server"

Oh how I love that. Witcher, Skyrim, all the stalker games, all the borderlands game run fine, while FD can't get its finger out. Cheapskates! Bloody cheapskates.

In all fairness to FD, it got better!!. I ran the two missions that I already had on board. Both of them, oddly enough, to destroy the generator at the same planet settlement. I love eye-balling stuff like that in the missions, similar requests to the same end-point delivery location, etc., so you can really milk it but also serve the greater cause, at the same time.

And when I got back to the pay-out outpost for the missions, the Mission Board did come up, and for the remainder of the game-play session last night, I may have only had one more time-out on the Mission Board.

But my over-the-top pseudo-complaint, combined with your comment, do illustrate an underlying issue. And quite simply put, FD may be overextending themselves in their seal to deliver us a more and more complex game experience. But we also have to bear in mind that they are one of very few shops in town, who deliver a solid PC gaming experience.

If it wasn't for Elite-D, I think I would have almost given up on PC games, period. Who wants to play any of the new generation, badly done console ports. The only other games that I play with any degree of consistency right now, are PlanetSide 2, Fallout 4 and a smattering of Euro Truck Sim 2.. here's a shot of my Mercedes truck.

I have built a Cobra Mk III - Coriolis which is expressly for planet based ops; settlement infiltration runs in the scarab, skimmer kill missions and the odd canister recovery missions from time to time. There has been a big improvement in the mechanics for the planet based recovery missions.

And in a semi-related side note, one of the changes now is that a ship recall from the scarab, can have your ship land really close to a settlement where you have just run an op, and this is an op to typically take out the main generator for a small to medium, low or medium security settlement.

And some of the missions are in awkward and tight to get into, geographic locations. You're forced to land a leetle too close to the settlement for comfort. It's very much of a cat and mouse game. This was the case last night. I drove the scarab away from the settlement, but when I recalled the Cobra, it landed just a few hundred meters away from the settlement.

And this is where the current game mechanic is velly interesting, Arte Johnson - YouTube. The ship coming down unmanned, doesn't trigger any trespass warnings or any type of hostile response from the settlement. But after you get into the ship, set your egress target and take off, all hell can, and sometimes will, break loose.

So even though my Cobra is almost as fast as it can be, given its current multi-purpose role and configuration, after I punched the boost to get the hell out of Dodge, I took on some fire from the base and I triggered a trespass warning. This resulted in a 4,050-cr bounty because I couldn't exit the trespass perimeter, quickly enough.

A word to the wise for any fellow Cmdr's in a similar situation, take the time to drive your scarab a little further away from the settlement before you recall your ship. [cool]

And my apologies to one and all about my silly-rabbit Mining-related comments. And at the risk of my making a long story even longer, I did actually build a Type-6 Miner - Coriolis and I got my feet wet with a few runs. But even though I'm a non-combat player, mining was just a little too slow-paced and too prone to NPC pirate attacks, for my taste.

And later on, I also built an Asp Explorer Miner - Coriolis, but I never took it out on any test runs, it got the old chop-shop routine, broken up and sold off.

And now with a little over 100-Mil Credits in the Intergalactic Bank, I'm really keen to see what I can spend them on with the up and coming v2.2 update. [big grin]
