Been playing Elite from the start but i am having problem with Failed to communicate with sever" message on bulletin board and refinery working very slow? i have new $5000 computer thought it my be the internet so i pregtest new modem check speed still same problem! never had any problems before, start 3 week ago any one can help Thank you p.s NO HELP FROM ELITE

Without a load more information, ISP, your OS, your hardware, your other software and so on, it's difficult to say.
But I do suggest you start by looking at your security software. Are you running more than one? Frankly, if you're just connected to Elite, you could probably turn that off as well.
Then any updaters. Updating routines on many software simply start as they feel like. Turn off all updating. It should be off anyway.
Firewalls are a frequent source of problems, especially software. Do you use a router? If so, then you probably have a hardware firewall. A hardware firewall is so much better than software so turn off all software firewalls, including Windows firewall.

Turn off all scanning.
Next check you don't have software installed which is stealing memory.
It's a matter of elimination. Sorry to say, but these things are rarely down to the servers. Simply because when the server goes down, it does for everyone.
Incidentally, the Gibson Page is generally excellent. But the guy is way over cautious. His stuff is all excellent and will do what it claims. But the need for all of it is perhaps not so much.
