Fair Warning!

If for some reason FDev decide that loot boxs are the way to fund Elite post 'beyond' series of updates, I will be taking my own loot box's down to Cambridge.

98.9% One Torch, One pitchfork
1.0% One Torch, One pitchfork with sharpened tines.
0.1% Rusty Spoon "It will hurt more"

Joking aside, I'm happy with paid-DLC and cosmetic transactions but I would not want to see "Loot box's" be the way that future income is earned. For 'those' people this is not an actual threat to FDev it is a Joke about a issue that can be heated and i'm starting it off in a light hearted way.

Your thoughts?

Frontier have said it's not a model they have considered, I'd personally be very surprised if they did.

Depends what's in these loot boxes :)

I'd pay for a loot box in lieu of not having to pay for some awesome content...

But it leaves the choice to the players.

I could donate a Dominoes Pizza 'loot box' to FDEV office to help keep energy levels high lol.

It's impossible not to find stuff to dislike about ED after meeting the Sandy and seeing his own passion for it :D

Meh.. I could stomach a lootbox. It may contain a few hundred B in credits! (or it may not).

Oh look, it's the hot topic du jour.

Thank you for you hipster response, I guess when you where railing about the cost of ship transfer it was you not doing something 'du jour.'

Just because the Loot box craze in Full price titles has been propelled into the media does not mean that it has not been on peoples radar for a long time. It's just a continuation of day 1 DLC, publishers trying to squeeze more money from IP's by creating revenue streams that are typically only seen in free-to-play games. Buying diamonds to reduce cool down timers etc. But I'm sure you would be happy if ship transfers could only done by tokens that you 'might' earn in a lock box.

How's your pumkin spiced latte?

But what if they're real life Loot-boxes and you pay, say $25, and you get a box from FDev full of some random Frontier swag, with a mix of cool and 'meh' items? Never knowing what you're really getting?

For some reason people have been getting really mad about the idea of paid-for random item boxes over the last few days as if they were a new thing. I blame millennials.

I'd not heard this before this thread. Was this mentioned as happening? Why is it a topic?

Thanks.

Random item boxes? You mean like paint jobs and bobbleheads?

I'm completely lost.

Yes. You buy a "box" that you then open, with no guarantee on what's inside.

I think it's all the rage to discuss right now as there's a petition to UK government to make loot boxes illegal or something.

To be fair, they use gambling tactics to exploit people with gambling addiction so they can create "Whales". Nothing Casinos not doing but at least theres some gambling regulation going on there while the gaming industry can sell that stuff with a rating for teens on the box and zero regulation.

Its pretty shady all in all and on top that tends to make games worse.

Items would be what? Some Commodities? Some Materials?

I can't imagine paying real money for any of that stuff. Ever. It's a weird concept in Elite... It's not like any one Commodity or Material will somehow make me win?

???

Thanks.

Games like Shadow of War, and Battlefront II and whatnot are selling 'loot boxes' that basically say "pay real money to open this box, and get 'something'..."

That 'something' is completely random.

It's basically money grabbing and gambling combined, which IMHO, should be illegal in games for under 18's. (Or whatever the legal gambling age is in your country).
Pay to win, that's fine, I suppose (some games rely entirely on this).
Gamble to, err, maybe, win... No. Lol

If FD started doing this, I'd be very disappointed, but I love ED, so I'd keep playing. But I'd never buy anything except expansions ever again.
Although, it would be kinda funny to pay £1 and receive a random paintjob for a random ship. I'd do that once for a laugh. I'd probably end up with a hideous paintjob for the Imperial Cutter. A ship I never intended to own. Lol

It's a money grab, and also makes a lot of the games pay to win. As you can spend more to get boxes that have a chance at better items in them, sometimes god-level items that can only be received if you spend enough and are lucky enough.

So imagine if you could go around and buy an Elite loot box that had a 1% chance of containing a level 6 engineering mod....

I hope it goes through, but I have my doubts, loot boxes are for the gamblers, these are the folk who will want to keep them.

Differs game by game. But often it's cosmetic items.

ESO Crown Crates is a prime example. You might also get items that are, well, pointless. A couple of potions, a crafting item, maybe an experience scroll?

But the crates are sold on the possibility of extravagant cosmetic items, items that command a rare drop rate. (sub-1%)

Things like mounts, costumes, hats...

It is gambling, and kids get attracted by the shiny items, and spend a fortune to get the item they want.
