Ships Fairly new player here: Is the Anaconda worth the price tag?

I started playing the game a few weeks ago, and I'm loving it. I'm currently flying a DB Scout, and am grinding to save up enough cash for a larger ship so i can go exploring. Should I shoot for an Anaconda or should I aim for something more cost effective?

As an explorer (Almost Elite ranked) I can tell you that the AspX can do 98% of what the Annie can do.
The DBX can do about 75% of what the AspX is capable of.
For my first trip, I took a Cobra III. It did the job splendidly.
Then went to the core in a DBX. No issues there, either, but that was before horizons.
With horizons you'll likely not enjoy the lack of internal space in the DBX, but the AspX has enough for any trip.
Plus, the AspX has two advantages over the Anaconda: 1, turns better in supercruise. 2, WAY better visibility.

To answer the question, yes the Anaconda is worth the price tag. It's a fantastic ship, but might not be the most cost effective for exploring. You should go for the AspX for exploration "cheapness".

And don't forget! That price tag is just the start.
Upgrading it is very expensive.
Some of the A grade upgrades are more expensive then the ship it self.

Basically anything that has about 30LY jump range and at least 5 optional internal compartments is a great explorer. :)

Anaconda has only one real advantage for exploration and that is a jump range much better thaan others. But REAL explorers will tell you that it doesn't matter. The longer the jump range, the more systems you skip. That means faster travel but less exploration. ;)

I'm not saying Annie is not good for exploration, but honestly, if you mean it seriously, T6 is all you need. AspX is a bit better (you can bring more SRVs and whatnot) but not necessary. Plus T6 has THE best cockpit for exploration.

Yes. Yes it is!
Its an extremly versitle ship and can be proficiently set up with an excellent jump range for explorers, many hardpoints for battle and a huge capacity for cargo carrying(434tons i remember). And can specialise in any of these three areas when set up to do so......mine is a mining vessle currently.

Flimley

Yes.
I'll put that into perspective: just earned 61mil in 1hr of Sothis mission running in a grade 5 FSD modified long range Trader variant (55ly).
Also super explorers: mine got me to Beagle point and back.
Don't listen to the haters, they haven't got a clue. Conda is the best Multirole ship money can buy, and it WILL make you bags of credits.
Oh and the bridge is cool too.

GET THE ANACONDA!

I started playing the game a few weeks ago, and I'm loving it. I'm currently flying a DB Scout, and am grinding to save up enough cash for a larger ship so i can go exploring. Should I shoot for an Anaconda or should I aim for something more cost effective?

[up] Get the Anaconda and you can earn enough in a few hours to buy two of any "more cost effective" ship. The Anaconda is worth every credit and to outfit it properly you will spend a lot of them. Don't worry though, once the credits start to flow your sense of scale adjusts. I just spent over 600 million credits outfitting a Corvette (at 10% off!) and I ain't done yet. [cry]

That having been said, it would suck to buy your Anaconda, fly out of the station and get blown up, then have to begin again in a Sidewinder so, hold off purchasing that Anaconda until you can purchase the hull and outfit it to your satisfaction with enough credits left over for at least one and preferably two re-buys. A good rule-of-thumb is to never buy a ship until you can do this.

An Asp-Explorer will earn around 5-10 million per lap doing the Ceos/Sothis/Bubble runs, A Python will earn 12-20 million and just a few days ago my Anaconda earned me 62 million in a single lap, NET. That's after fuel costs, repairs, restocks, donation missions, etc.

But you said exploring. Yes, the Anaconda can go exploring, especially in and around the bubble where jump distances are not very long but once you get out into the sticks the Anaconda's relatively short legs and thirst for fuel will begin to tell. The Asp-X does it much better.

If the Anaconda price-tag is looking a little steep right now, get the Asp-Explorer (Asp-X). Great legs, decent cargo capacity and arguably the best small exploration ship in the game. A Python will carry more but has short legs so, long-distance runs are a chore and the again, Asp-X does it much better and cheaper. There's a reason it is called Asp Explorer. [up]

I absolutely love my conda and plan to take it to the C3E expedition in November.

Honestly I'd say its down to personal preference about what makes the best explorer. I know my conda takes longer to turn in supercruise but it doesn't bother me and i quite like having a 55ly jump range so i can get places faster (usually when i want to get back to the bubble).

Yes. Worth it.

Buy an anaconda immediately using Sothis. Look it up.

Give yourself a pat on the back. You own the third biggest ship in the game :D

Don't worry about A-rated modules being expensive. Buy D rated to keep the mass down. Then just take it to your local HazRez site and pick on just about anything to earn the money for the A modules :)

If you have enough credits to purchase it, fit it out to mostly A-grade, and have a few re-buys left over, then yes. Otherwise, no.

The number one mistake people make in ED is buying a ship too soon, before they can really afford to fly (and possibly lose) it. Doing this results in massive frustration.

The Anaconda itself is a great ship, I use it a lot. But it's also a pretty expensive ship to own, which means you better have some funds as a cushion.

I know some folks say you can get by with less than A-rated, but except for life support and sensors, I don't agree.

You can do that IF you're very experienced in the game, and know exactly how to handle interdictions and other situations, and how to minimize your risk. If you are not that experienced, you're much better off in a stronger ship.

Good luck out there, commander.

The Anaconda is a very effective explorer if outfitted correctly but very expensive. It has the potential to have the highest possible jump range of any ship after engineer upgrades, its the end-game exploration ship.

"Worth the price" is really subjective, some would rather have a Caterham over a Ferrari, some will stick with their Cobra to death's door.

Personally I think it is, for me it's a beautiful ship, it's an ocean liner, a luxury yacht, it flys majestically & can give & take a shed load of punishment.

Even better is shortly it'll be getting fighter bays, which are uber fun for flying over planetary surfaces looking for geisers.

At the end of the day you should fly as many ships as you can up to when you can afford an Anaconda, if you like the idea of being a CMDR of one of the largest ships in the game then take the plunge. If you're happy zipping about in one of the cheaper ships then all the power to you :)

Everything about the Anaconda is fairly expensive, and it's not particularly fast or maneuverable, but it packs quite a punch in combat.
It can easily be outfitted for exploration, combat, trading, or even mining.
If you do enough combat mission in an Anaconda, you begin to start learning how to use Flight Assist-Off, which is practically a necessity for it to be used effectively.

I love the annie, but prefer exploring in my trusty Asp.
The view and the handling is better by far.

I started playing the game a few weeks ago,

Should I shoot for an Anaconda or should I aim for something more cost effective?

Aiming for something long term is fine, but you might get more fun out of the game overall if you also have some nearer term goals to aim for, that way each ship upgrade feels like a nice thing, whereas if you just jump to the most expensive right away you might not value the intermediary steps as much any more.

Guilty.
