Fallen through a black hole

HI all

I've been around the boards for sometime leapt in when I heard about the kickstarter. But never played Elite at all till now. However as I've listened, read and commented I realise that there seems to be quiet a growing bit of back story based on the previous games.

I just wondered beyond a wiki (which lets be honest about it unless you know what you are searching for is like reading an encyclopedia starting at the 'A's) is there anywhere that tells someone who fell through black hole into the Elite universe where they are. History to present time, factions, ships and so on. I ask because I read the Dark Wheel and thought that there was a lot in that I'd never heard off, then I hear other people talking about the various ships and things like founder worlds and I must admit I draw a blank. So is there a source someone can point to beyond a wiki?

Thanks

Ab

I'd find that very useful as well. I have played them all but my memory is not what it was.

And my memory is not what it was.

I'd consider reading the Dark Wheel a great place to get the feel of Elite.

You can read it for free here

Enjoy :D

Truth be told, as of yet I don't think there's terribly much to tell about the Elite universe. The original Elite game was set against a very scattershot sci-fi backdrop which was painted with only the broadest of strokes. Don't get me wrong, it's an absolute marvel what Braben and Bell did with the small amount of memory they had to work with, but most of the flavor came from the manual and the novella—and the player's imagination. The Frontier games are much more focused in this regard, but unfortunately, their backdrops don't quite fit Elite's without some retconning.

All in all, I wouldn't worry about the backstory. We'll just have to wait and see how the writers are going to tie it all together.

Thanks guys, TJ I just read it and that is what got me thinking about the back story, such as it was. Dark Wheel seemed to mention lots of alien species including Thargoids, mixing together! Where now that doesn't seem so likely.

Anyway will take a look, thanks.

Foremost, Elite is an inner feeling. Calling on the personal imagination. Each person has his personal Elite in his heart and his soul. However, in the continuity of the Elite series, Dangerous should provide additional to real, with its wealth and its multiplayer mode. But in my opinion, Elite will remain something inner by its freedom of action, which matches your character.

To pick up were Patrick left off, The Elite series has always been about the player creating their own stories in the game. The factions, star systems even the ships all serve as the back drop to your own adventure. When you finally play one of the games I will give you the same advice I give to every new player to the series, think of the craziest, maddest thing you can do and try it, then see what happens. :D

However if it is more literature your after, here are two more links for you:

Life On The Frontier Site. This has all the stories books included originally with the previous 3 Elite games.

Also Drew (one of our members on here) wrote a great fiction series (The Oolite Saga) set in the Oolite universe, the open source version of the original Elite. Have a look at Drew's site here. :)

Hey all once again thank you. I had assumed that there might be a body of work a sort of bible of information pertaining to the Elite universe. My bad, but I had heard or wondered if this was the case, not least in part because the number of people rushing to write stuff and drabbles and stuff, not to mention the stories via Lave radio. Someone must know at least a bit about the mood and feel of the world. What is in and what isn't.

The point about the Dark Wheel is just that, its full of suggestions, how technology works, it had escape pods (something I thought didn't exist before E:D) aliens beyond the Thargoids etc, not to mention founder worlds - what are they. Anyway, I'll dig back through the thread and read what is there, but I guess it now seems that the game going forward will embrace a lot of elements, that previously were only hinted at or left to the imagination.

Thanks again
