Falling out of love with the Cobra MkIII

As much as I love the Cobra MkIII, I'd really like to see a Cobra MKIV released. :)

If you think about it, the MKIII is getting on a bit now and we've already seen an update to the Viper.

But the one I'm really waiting for is the Asp...

Well - I just bought the Cobra yesterday after having flown a viper for a week and so far I like it and my expectations are still high.

The problems I've had with the viper were the limited cargo capacity and jump range and whilst I was able to make some money using it, I missed the steady source of income the hauler provided.

Sometimes I just want to relax and do a profitable trading run and I found combat missions and bounty hunting to be sub-par when it comes to making money.

Blowing up other ships cargo hatches on nav beacons and hunting for gold drops wasn't bad, but I got tired of shooting all day long and again found the cargo capacity to limit my efficiency.

Moreover, the cockpit design, soundscape and general feel of a ship is very important to me. Whilst the Viper is mostly nice in these regards, I think it sounds like a nasty bronchitis when maneuvering at low speeds and the cranking sounds it makes when boosting made it feel a little cheap.

Don't get me wrong: FD did a great job at providing the ship with a certain feel and theme, it's just one I'm not particulary fond of.

If we had multiple ships, I guess I'd probably settle for a Lakon type IX and Viper, but right now, the cobra looks like the ship to fly for me.

I think we should withhold any jump range consideration until drive upgrades are available. I fully expect Cobras to go in the 10-20 LY range after drive upgrades, as it was the case in the old Elite 2. It has plenty of space to fit a better drive. Viper on the other hand, agile as it is, will be forever nearly planet-bound, as it should be.

But that doesn't make sense, a Viper Mk2 with Military drives should be able to jump great distances.

It really depends on what you want to do doesn't it. For the average player who wants to try a bit of everything the Cobra is a great starting point. If you want to bounty hunt you don't need the cargo space, you want speed and power which is where the viper sits (or the Fer-de-Lance, be still my beating heart.....). If you want to trade the Lakon type 6 is a great starting point. Ultimately you are going to pick a ship based on what you want to do in the game.

you will be able to own multiple ships at release with a hanger rented from the station.

Just buy a Type 6 for trade and a viper in every station group outside the vipers range!!

trade a bit and in system buy a viper for fighting, park it and drive out in the type 6 to another area with a cargo wher you have a viper in the parking hangar!!

or wait till there are the bigger ship which you can park your small range ships inside!! That's what I want :)

Switching ships come release will be a lot more expensive as (IMO) the current prices are merely place holders.

Why would it? It's an interceptor, optimised for burst speed. It's no long range explorer or trader.

In Frontier / First Encounters they were described as the military strike craft ferried around with giant carriers.

I flew a viper for about a week before I got bored and changed to a cobra. Essentially the sidey/eagle/viper all require the same approach to combat flying wheres the cobra is a different animal altogether and much more challenging to get the best out of, but once mastered its a match for anything if not actually better than the viper 1 on 1.

The Asp was the absolute daddy in E2: Frontier

I've not tried a cobra here yet, havng too much vipery fun. I think once the mechanism of drive upgrades becomes clear (Frontier style at the expense of cargo capacity?) then we'll see where the cobra really lies.

Always hated the Cobra Mk III, always.

It was always the Asp for me. All through various version of Elite I looked at those Asps longingly.

Never bought a Cobra Mk III in Frontier or FFE.

It wouldn't be Elite without the Cobra Mk III. It's a tradition, a heritage and probably a trademark! It just wouldn't feel right playing the game without the Cobra in it.

From Frontier on many ships were added and of course everyone will find their niche per their current gameplay needs. They will often change and go for something new or maybe dial in more higher level missions when they become available using the best ship to do it. Heck get through the hand-coded missions in FFE and you could fly a Thargoid Warship! Me in FE2 I got rich with a Panther Clipper then went for an Eagle Mk II with Military engines for long distance jumps and increasing my military rank while finally making Elite.

But I'll always come back to the Cobra. There is some emotion involved here. It is the baseline where I determine how good or bad my flying skills are. Remember the Mel Gibson movie "Forever Young" (c1992)? "If you can land a B-25, you can do anything!". The same applies to a Cobra Mk III.

Perhaps an online combat contest where all players can choose whatever weapons loadout but have to be in a Cobra Mk III. Sort of like a Formula 1 race. Then we will see real talent versus hardware.

Asp, Viper, Krait, Sidewinder, Adder, Mamba, Anaconda, Boa, Python and Cobra..

Legendary snake inspired ships that all had their strengths and weaknesses. Just isn't Elite without them.

If a shipyard is a toolbox then the Cobra is the multitool among box cutters, knives, and sanders all great at what they do but rather useless in the glovebox of my car on a long trip.

That's the beauty of the Cobra.

Who cares about Cobras? They are fun and iconic, and has been mentioned they are pretty good at everything. However, every man and his dog has one. Time for something different I think.

Devs - please release the Asp :)

As a fellow Asp lover (does that sound a bit... wrong?) I endorse this message! :D

Well there's not plans I've heard of for Boa, Mamba or Krait at present. :(
I'm not too worried about that at the moment I bet more ships will come through expansion in the future... that said I'm surprised to hear about the Krait not being in the cards, I was under the impression it was and I thought I have seen quite a few design sketches showing what was most certainly a ship resembling a Krait...

I've been up to the Type 9 and now I'm back in the Cobra until I stumble across an Anaconda.

I'm experimenting with heat management and the Cobra runs pretty cold compared to other ships.

With the shields off, you can move around with zero heat output.
I've been cold scooping gold, and running cold into the station to sell it.

No need for the FA off shennanigans at all, just increase thrust slowly, and avoid the lateral thrusters.

Aye.. bring on the Asp II.... please. It will be interesting to see how engine upgrades will affect the ships. Maybe a fully upgraded Viper will become a viable prospect.
