Family Tree

Please add a family tree for the animals under the Studbook menu.

I'm assuming inbreeding results in problems in the game? I noticed some of my animals getting really poor genetics fertility/immunity and I did notice these animals had been inbreeding, but because there is no indication anywhere that relationships are tracked in the game, I didn't realize this would be an issue.
(unless this is just a coincidence?)

I would love to see a family tree that goes at least as far back as grandparents, tracks mother/father/siblings, so that I can effectively manage my animal population.

When playing the beta I figured they would add it to the "Social" tab since mates ARE being displayed there. Was really disappointing to not see this feature added, I mean even Zoo Tycoon 2 had this feature, and that game came out in 2004! And besides being necessary for preventing inbreeding, it also really works on forming a bond with your animals, since you know where they came from, this way you could track the history of the entire family :)

That, and the fact that it distances you from the animals, like I don't feel as involved when there isn't a lineage to look after.

To avoid inbreeding, go into the "Genetics" tab of the animal, and click "Compare Mates". This opens a window where you can compare all the animals of that species with the opposite sex. If they're related it will say so in big red letters between the two animals.

Ah. There it is. A simple feature, important to a core mechanic in the game, hidden under an unnecessary amount of extra clicks.

I tried to find how to figure out who was mother and father to one baby animal but I could not. I think it must be there, at very least the very immediate parents...

Helena, I don't think it is. I have spent an age trying to work this out, but the studbook seems to show when mating took place (successfully) but no other data.

Really needs work. The family tree in CKII would be ideal.

I am currently using Bengal Tigers to build a family tree to see what relationship level is insignificant for "inbreeding" flag.

e.g.
Parent & Offspring = Inbreeding (of course)
Siblings = Inbreeding (of course)
Step siblings = Inbreeding
Cousins = TBC
2nd Cousins = TBC

I think cousins will be ok for the game mechanic but, by my reckoning I am going to need 5 habitats or more to achieve this and pulling together a breeding schedule is going to be crazy!

Yes this informs you about inbreeding but doesn't help you buy the right animal (or avoid the wrong one). It's reactive rather than proactive

I am now adopting a naming system that will show the lineage, but of course I have to catch when it is bred and then born. :D I am using letters.. A for father, B for mother (and C, and... if needed) and then couple's kids will be AB (or AC) but I haven't thought of next gen however.

Good plan... I am using pen and paper haha

I was tempted to go with some middle ages naming convention but couldn't be bothered haha
